Audio Device supported by this application is not detected

Hi there
I have a Dimension 400/9150 with Windows XPS. Bought direct from Dell with everything installed. I just had some problems with my monitor, now sorted, and directly after this installed Explorer 7. Now my sound won't work and I am getting the above message (Audio Device supported by this application is not detected) when I try the volume control icon. I have gone through the troubleshooting processes. Device manager - no alerts and all the sound items say sound devices are working properly and they are all enabled. When I bring up the Sound & Audio Devices Properties box, everything is greyed out - unable to select anything at all on the Volume, Audio and Voice Tabs.

I have tried downloading and installing the drivers. No change. When I tried to reinstall from the original Soundblaster CD it said "Unable to detect a supported product on your system. Ensure your application is properly installed." I've done all the bog standard stuff like checking all the leads, making sure everything is hooked up properly and turned on, etc. No problems there.

Can anyone help, please? any help very much appreciated!!

Reinstall the chipset drivers then try the sound drivers again.  See if that helps.

BTW, there is no "Windows XPS".  There is Windows XP, Home, Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Media Center Edition.

Dell does have "XPS" PC models.

If yours is an XPS model there is a separate forum section just for XPS systems.  Here is the link to the XPS Audio section, and again if you have an XPS repost there.  http://delltalk.us.dell.com/supportforums/board?board.id=xps_desk_audio

Many thanks for your help - tried your suggestion, plus system restore and its still not working, so I will have to check the sound card.

Cheers

Before u do that, try the following steps.

Remove the soundblaster drivers from add/remove pgms and also from the device manager.

Now install the driver for the integrated sound from the website www.support.dell.com

Now restart the system and go to BIOS by pressing F2 at the dell logo.

Make sure that the integrated audio is off in the BIOS

After that restart the system again and install the soundblaster drivers

(I understand that you are using a PCI sound card but still u have to install the integrated audio drivers.)

I hope this will help you
Go to control panel click sound and audio devices, change the sound scheme, click audio, default device dropdown menu select the integrated audio device that your pc ex. sigma tel audio then apply.
