Audio Device supported by this application is not detected

Hi there
I have a Dimension 400/9150 with Windows XPS. Bought direct from Dell with everything installed. I just had some problems with my monitor, now sorted, and directly after this installed Explorer 7. Now my sound won't work and I am getting the above message (Audio Device supported by this application is not detected) when I try the volume control icon. I have gone through the troubleshooting processes. Device manager - no alerts and all the sound items say sound devices are working properly and they are all enabled. When I bring up the Sound & Audio Devices Properties box, everything is greyed out - unable to select anything at all on the Volume, Audio and Voice Tabs.

I have tried downloading and installing the drivers. No change. When I tried to reinstall from the original Soundblaster CD it said "Unable to detect a supported product on your system. Ensure your application is properly installed." I've done all the bog standard stuff like checking all the leads, making sure everything is hooked up properly and turned on, etc. No problems there.

I've just tried downloading and installing chipset drivers, but that hasn't made any difference :(/

Can anyone help, please? any help very much appreciated!!

If you still can,  I'd try a system restore to a point prior to IE7.  If not go to the control panel/add remove programs and uninstall IE7, it will automatically revert you back to IE6.  Note: IE 7 does not get along with Norton.  I'm waaiting for Vista to go to IE7.  I tried it and had some problems with my computer.  After reverting to IE6 all is well again.  If the above does not work and if you have a sound card make sure it is seated well,  just take it out and put it back in ck all connections etc.

Many thanks for your help Uncle Ripper. Have tried *everything* now and it still isn't working, so reckon it must be the card. Will have to give that a try this weekend.

Cheers

you could give this one last try and that would be to get ther sound card drivers from the dell site....then go get a copy of the program DriveCleaner Pro.....
Download and install this program.....then go into control panel and remove all soundblaster programs....
Reboot the computer into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key just after the Dell splash screen at boot up....
Run the DriveCleaner pro in safe mode and you will see an listing for Creative..run that cleaner....
Boot back into normal mode and try reinstalling  the Soundblaster drivers again....
you might have a corrupt file or two still lurking on the system Driver Cleaner will get rid of all the driver files when it runs giving you a clean system as if you had never installed it...

Worth a shot in my book...
