Auto Detect Analog

1.  Auto Detect (Analog) with image of monitor plug.  Aforementioned is the "warning" and then screen goes black.  Monitor is working.  Checked connections and will briefly pop up normal screen image when I turn computer on/off.  Normal screen appears when I turn monitor on/off for a brief second.  Can someone please tell me what to do.  Large Dell monitor.  Help!!!!
