Where are you trying to backup to? To an external USB disk? To an internal disk? What is the capacity of the target disk?
To backup, you need a program that is compatible with UEFI and Windows 8. One option, not free, is Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite.

I'm trying to backup to a 160gb USB drive.
This is a new PC so only has Win 8 installed.

It seems that, for some reason, Windows backup needs a larger disk, and that Macrium fails because it can´t handle an UEFI partition.
The obvious options are to use Windows and a larger USB disk, or to try another program, like the one suggested above.

In the end I've used diskimage XML and Paragon 8
