Blank screen on boot up

Recently I have been having a problem with the monitor being black from the time I turn the computer. After about a half hour if I turn the monitor off and back on I will get the blue log in screen.  I have a Viewsonic VG2230wm monitor. The PC is a Dell Inspiron 545S Pentium Dual Core CPU E5300 4 GB RAM, 2.60 GHz 64 bit OS running Win 7 Home Premium.

I checked the driver for the monitor and it had Generic Non PnP Monitor for the driver dated 2006.  I was able to change it to the Viewsonic VG2230wm SERIES driver dated 2009.  Every time I shut the computer down and turn it back on the reverts back to the Generic Non PnP Monitor. I am not sure that is the problem.

When I look at the devices and printers (Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers) it is showing a laptop for my PC with a yellow triangle with and exclamation mark next to the laptop.  When I right click on the icon and troubleshoot the problem first I get  Reinstall device driver, then I get a message, Troubleshooting was unable to automatically fix all the issues found.  You can find more details below. Problem found, remote desktop generic USB device (redirected) has a driver Not fixed problem.

I have manually tried to update the computer driver, ACPIx64-based PC, but every time I update it says, Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date, ACPIx64-based PC. The incorrect icon of a laptop with the yellow triangle remains on the page with Devices and Printers.

I think that the PC thinks it is a laptop and doesn't send any signal to the monitor. I get nothing, not even the blue rectangle with "Analog" that I usually get when the monitor first goes on before it switches to the Win 7 boot up screens.

If a PC suddenly fails to boot properly, you should  perform a hard reset as the first procedure.
  1. Disconnect all peripheral devices and remove all USB devices and media cards. You want to test the computer not the accessories!
  2. Disconnect the AC power adapter, remove the battery, and then  press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter (but do not connect the battery),  Press the Power button, Look for glowing LEDs near  caps lock and  num lock keys, and  Listen for sounds of a disk drive and fan turning.

If the display remains blank (black screen or white screen) after doing a hard reset, temporarily connect an external monitor to test the notebook's display. If an image displays on the external monitor, continue to perform the tests, install drivers, and make adjustments as described in the next section.

This is a desktop computer, not a notebook.  When I go to  | Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Devices and Printers | it shows a laptop icon and  when I right click on the icon it shows PC properties as a Dell model number unavailable Category Laptop, which of course it is not. Description unavailable.

Are you using an uninterruptable power supply (UPS), which can cause this kind of  problem, eg read this.

If using a UPS, is its driver up-to-date?

Do you have the latest version of BIOS?
