Boot from flash drive to install Windows 98?

I want to upgrade my parents old deskto from Win95 to Win98.  The problem is that their 3 1/4" floppy doesn't work so I can boot from it, which is need for the install to succeed.  Is there a way to boot from a removable flash drive or from a CD, and then insert the Win98 CD to run the installation?

Thanks.

It depends on the system - any system old enough to need 98 probably cannot boot from a flash drive.

If it can boot from a CD drive, you can try that however - if your 98 CD isn't bootable, you will need to make a bootable CD to do it.

Yes, Windows 98 and earlier do not include the required drivers for using a flash drive. To use a flash drive at all, you need windows 98, and the drivers from the flash drive manufacturer's website. Your best bet is to boot from a CD.

Just went through some of this; yes, you need drivers on 98 to access a USB flash drive, and the Win 98 disks are not bootable.  Win 98 Second Edition was the first CD from MicroSoft to be made bootable.  Everything before this needs a DOS start-up disk.
