CPU Upgrade for Dimension 4550

I have a Dimension 4550 with a 2.0 Ghz CPU.

I want to upgrade the CPU.  From what I read on the blogs here, I can upgrade it to a P4 3.06Mhz 522 Front Side Bus with 512 Cache.

The only possible problem I can see is that it can't be a mobile CPU.  They only register as 1.6 Mhz (been there, done that).

I have found several appropriate CPU's for about $70 - $90.

My question is, does anyone know for sure what the Intel CPU number is?

As far as I can determine it should be either Pentium 4 3.06  CPU No. SL6SM or CPU No. SL6S5 .

Thank you very much Bev!

One more question, would you know if the 4550 can support 2 Gig of Ram?

I already have 1Gig, and I know the Specs say 1Gig Max, but on some of the threads they say 2 Gig will work...

Thanks so much!  Your the best!

Yes, I've read the same threads about installing 2gb [2x1gb modules] in the 4550 with a 533 FSB.

Unfortunately, when I had a 4550, I never tried using the 2gb, only 1gb.

You can try installing the 2gb and see what happens, the worse that can happen is, the system will not start and you will receive error messages.
