CPU Upgrade

I have a Dell 0NWWY0 motherboard with a AMD Athlon II X4 640 CPU Chipset AMD 785G.  I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade the CPU to an AMD Phenom II X6?  If so is the performance increase worth the price?

You have a STUDIO XPS 7100  Just Giving part numbers is too little information for most.

We are users not Dell Engineering.

Motherboard 0NWWY0 A00

Chipset: AMD 785G

Southbridge: AMD SB700

LPCIO: ITE IT8721

I believe it will take 6-core AMD 1055T

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor HDT55TFBGRBOX

I believe it also supports quad-core AMD Athlon and Phenom II processors and  Athlon II x4 630.

CURRENT BIOS IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED BEFORE changing processor.

Chris M may have a list of Validated Processors for this system.

Should be installed as Administrator with ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE UNINSTALLED.

Some antivirus software crashes the bios update and kills the system before it can be upgraded.

Reinstall Antivirus software after Bios update.

Thanks.  I do indeed have a XPS 7100.  I will upgrade the BIOS and try a Phenom II X61075 on the MB.  I well also disable my anti-virus software (MS Security Essentials)  prior to the BIOS upgrade.

I saw that.  Amazon sent me an e-mail because I had been looking at fans for AMD CPU's.  The price on that one got me considering an upgrade.

I am unsure that it will give me a significant performance boost.

According to CPU benchmark Athlon II X4 640 average CPU benchmark is 3357, mine Phenom II x4 965 BE (not overclocked) average CPU benchmark is 4303, and AMD Phenom II X6 1045T average CPU benchmark is 4854 - it will make a noticeable difference for you, maybe not huge, but still a difference.

@SpeedStep: I just wondering regarding Inspiron 570 capabilities, because my chipset is also 785G, Southbridge also SB700, only LPCIO is IT8720 not IT8721, is it also can hypothetically support X6 similar family processors?

Just curious.

I think I will do the upgrade to the Phenom II, which has a L3 cache that my Athlon does not.

Too late.  I already ordered it.  I did quite a bit of research on this upgrade, including the question I posed on this forum.  It seems like a doable project.  If it is not, I will send the CPU back.

With 965 BE you most likely can even overcklock you XPS!

Do not upgrade the cpu. It is the worse hardware attempt to make. The computer will probably not even start after you do. Trust what I am telling you.

It will work, don't worry, I upgraded Inspiron 570 from Athlon II x2 250 to Phenom II x4 965 BE, we have the same chipset just different motherboard, mine is inferior to yours, I wish I had yours! The only my worries are with cooling this beast, going to work now, will come back to investigate cooling for you tomorrow. Just make sure you have latest BIOS. The rest is in details. I am not sure if I can find distance between motherboard and side panel anywhere, please measure it - it maybe necessary for upgrading your CPU cooler.

I have the latest BIOS installed.  The new CPU is coming with a heat sink and fan.  If it is something less than what was installed by Dell, I will use that heat sink.   I just replaced the fan on my current CPU, so I even have some thermal paste left from that project.

I know how to overclock Dell it will require fresh Windows reinstall. And AMD overdrive will work, I went through this already, 80 mm would not be able to cool down 965, be ready to spend another $30 or so for standard cooling, can 120 mm tower cooling fit inside?

The OEM heat sink/fan is fairly robust (80mm PWM Fan on a 3" heat sink).  Hopefully, I will be able to use that system.  If not I will keep an eye on CPU temps to see if I need something that is more efficient.

The BIOS does not allow for any overclocking even using AMD's Overdrive software, so there will be none of that.

I will post when I get it all together and running.
