CPU fan is definitely dead...CPU usage at 100%

I have two questions for this issue. First, I am running this Dell 8200 with a dead CPU fan. Should this be keeping my CPU usage at 100% all the time, even in hybernation? Secondly, I have this rig opened up as much as possible and am still using it to post here. Is it safe to keep on using this rig with the back/front all opened up, until I can get me another cooling fan?

What AV/AS software do you have running?  If you have a trojan on your machine, it could be hidden from the task manager.

No.  A CPU fan going out will have nothing to do with the CPU load.  You have something running in the background that using up all of your resources.

Is it safe to keep on using this rig with the back/front all opened up, until I can get me another cooling fan?

No.  Without a fan, you are running the risk of burning up your CPU.  Even if you aren't doing any gaming, I'd still bet that your CPU temp is over 60c.

wmpnscfg.exe and wmpnetwk.exe are sharing windows media
and a back door into your machine.

E_S4I2J1.EXE  is "EPSON Stylus Photo R8xx" driver and a Memory hog

Thank you PH3NOM on the second question. I kind of knew the answer but was hoping I could at least use it for the internet browsing. I better shut down, I suppose.

On the first question, I cannot seem to find what would max the CPU out to 100%. I am very familiar with this PC, right down to every process and service and I have this thing streamlined for max speed. I can get it down to 23 running process and kill all the services, but the CPU is not budging from that 100% use. This Dell is my primary network connection on a 4hub wireless Linksys router. I have a love affair with this Dell 8200 and hate to let the thing die. It's still the fastest PC, I have ever had and I have had a good 100 of them by now.

EDIT: Maybe I have already fried the CPU to some point? That's all I can think would make it report 100% use. The lag is terrible, but once I opened up the case, things did speed up some. I have other CPU's lying about, but none are as good as the P4 I have presently. Oh Pooh!

Well actually, yes I could know. I am very, very familiar with the files in WINDOWS folder. I also run other apps such as, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Hijack This App.

But hey, you could be correct on this, since I am very careless and carefree with these things. Believe me, I have nothing worthwhile on this PC and am actually, loving this new adventure. This means, I get to do some fun maintenance on this 8200 and maybe I should see how high I can go with this mobo...since the opportunity has arisen.

side note: I have intentionally installed trojans and played with them, just to see what I could get away with. So this is no real biggy for me. Now is the time to load up HijackThis and see what is what. lol.

EDIT: Exposing my load of balogny:

How much RAM do you have installed, what model and speed is your CPU, and how many processes do you have running?  Another thing you might check is

Start > Run > CMD

Type netstat

This will show you a list of connections, incoming and outgoing, on your PC.

Well um,....I never run AV's. My Windows Firewall is on. Never have used Anit-virus, since win2000 and never get virus'...at least haven't for about ten years without ever running AV apps.

I am a music publicist, so I sort of frown on P2P. I run an honest clean machine.

However, I will not look a gift horse in the mouth. Maybe I finally got whacked. I'll check things out a bit closer and report back ASAP. I can use my other PC's to log on the forums- they have Nortons AV on them and firewalled.

Hahaha, how would you know that if you've never run an anti-virus scan?  You wouldn't.  If someone has a backdoor installed on your machine, you'd never know it.

If I were you, I'd download the latest AVG anti-virus FREE edition and Windows Defender.  You might be surprised at what each of those programs will find on your PC.

Thank you for helping out PH3NOM. Had some RL issues yesterday that took me away for a bit.

Dell 8200 Workstation/ Pentium4 2.3ghz/ 1gig ram/ Nvidia chip at 256mb(pixel shader 3.0/HDR/AA capable)

I do have Windows Defender and Spybot Search and Destroy, but haven't done a sys scan in quite some time.

I shut the Dell down, until I can replace the fan. I will get to the solution at that time.

I have several old fans lying about, but am worried, they wouldn't mount properly with the Dells internal design. have installed front fans in older PC's with P2 and P3 CPU's, but never done this with a Dell.

I am posting this with my laptop. At least, it does have Nortons AV, but the subscription will run out in two weeks and I am one who, firmly believes we end-users shouldn't have to pay for a secure connection. Unless of course, it is add-on fee included in my ISP's charges.

So, i will take your advice with my other PC's and try your suggestions. Wouldn't want them to follow the Dell.

P.S. Love your rig PH3NOM. It's definitely a hot rod build. SWEET!

Thanks for that tip Speedstep. I do have the Dell networked through a router, with 3 other machines on it and they share media files. Anyhow, I went ahead and disabled both of those processes and shut the Dell 8200 down for a day. I then opened it up and gave it a cleaning and checked the fans. Strangely, both fans work just fine, so the error message must have been a mistake???

Once I kicked 'er back on, the CPU is now back to normal- running an average 20%(normal) and everything has sped back up to normal, with the proper processes running.....I believe anyways.

Speedstep- like your name says- you gave me the right step to take and my speed is back up to excellent. Thank you! I now have my S&D up and the firewall enabled. No problems since.

Guys, I will swear by these Dell 8200's. They are still the best and easiest PC's to maintain and enjoy! I can still upgrade this machine too.

I have an intermittent problem with my XPS M1330 in that CPU usage sometimes goes to 100% & the performance drops right off.  After a while it come right.  I do not understand the above suggested solution

wmpnscfg.exe and wmpnetwk.exe are sharing windows media
and a back door into your machine.

E_S4I2J1.EXE  is "EPSON Stylus Photo R8xx" driver and a Memory hog

.  Can you explain it better ?

CrybKeeper,

Sounds like you got your problem resolved, but you may also want to run BIOS setup (F2 before Windows starts to load) and make sure CPU Speed is set to NORMAL, not to COMPATIBLE. Be sure to save any change before exiting BIOS setup.
