CPU upgrade on Precision 380
The new Precision Workstation 380 is Pentium 4 dual core capable. But none of the dual core processor is available other than the Pentium 4 D EE 840.
I really need a computer right now but want to have a dual core processor but am not willing to pay for the 840. So I am planning to get a 380 with only the 2.8GHz processor right now. When the 3.2GHz dual core (non EE) comes out, I like to swap the 2.8GHz out.
Does anyone know if there is any issue with this approach, such as, the 2.8GHz
heatsink may not be able to handle the thermal load of the 3.2GHz dual core. This is my biggest worry that I cannot get a proper Dell heatsink should the one for the 2.8GHz CPU does not cut it. May be Dell uses the same heatsink for all offered processors. If that is the case, then I'll be ok. Does anyone know?
Thanks in advance!

Recent test benchmarks comparison on the Intel’s dual cores are abysmal. The Pentium® 4 Processor EE, 3.73GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz blows the doors of the Intel’s new dual cores. Even AMD’s FX55 single core, and the new dual cores from AMD are considerable faster and by substantial margins on 95% of all benchmark tests.
Based on the benchmark tests, Intel’s current dual core architecture needs a lot refinements. I don’t believe you investment will yield the return if the chipset of the workstation 380 will not be compatible with the next generation dual cores from Intel in 2006.
I for one will wait until the next generation dual/quad core Xeon’s are out in 2006.

its been a year since your last post and I hope you have more info on the workstation.
On the dell configuration page there is a choice for Intel® Pentium® D 965EE, 3.73GHz Processor.
Will that proc not work as an upgrade on a 380?
I am confused. I purchased a barebones unit from ebay and currently looking for processor.
Does dell have a roadmap for the 380 series? I'd like to wait and get an EE P4 for the unit I purchased. What is the chipset on the motherboard?
I hope someone on these boards can answer. I love this machine. One of the best designed from dell, IMO.
Thanks in Advance!
