Calculator Key on KeyBoard stopped working

I have a new Dimension 8300 running Win XP home edition, with a Dell Enhanced Multimedia PS/2 Keyboard.

When I fist got the computer a week ago, I was able to press the calculator button on the Keyboard, to bring up the windows calculator on my monitor. Now the button does nothing.  Does anyone know how to repair this?

Thanks,

Fetrunner

Ok Walt. When I get home this evening, I will check my computer and get back to you.

Walt,

Dell shipped me a "Dell Enhanced Multimedia PS/2 Keyboard".  In my "control Panel" "keyboard properties" it says I have a "Standard 101/102-key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard".  under Driver File details it says I have the following drivers for this keyboard:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\i8042prt.sys

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\kbdclass.sys

My c:\Dell\drivers directory is empty.   This is because Dell I  installed the drivers and not me.  With the other computer I had I installed the drivers as you did and it did put a keyboard driver in that directory. But as I said in my previous posts, this did not fix my problem as noted at the beginning of this thread.

I hope this has been of help.

Lance,

Thanks.  You have been a great help.  At least it clears up some things for me.  Thanks again.

Lance,

Hot key problem solved! My keys were not compatable with my ISP. I can go to google or wahoo after signing on and have no problem there.  Guess I need to change my ISP.  Chalk one up for a Dell Tech.

I'm finding this interesting since I have a Dimension 4600 with the Standard 101/102 Keyboard or Natural PS/2 keyboard and I bought it new in March but the number keys on the right (calculator numbers) do not work. Plus sign works. When I want to put in numbers I must use the ones across the top of the keyboard. I found the resourceCD (should it be the one for Drivers and Utilities?) but I don't want to mess with something I don't know because everything works fine otherwise. I'm a gramma so a little slow on computers, but I would like to be able to use these keys rather than the top ones. Could anyone walk me through this? I figured something just needs to be reconfigured. Thanks for any help.

For the numeric keypad to work the Num Lock light must be on. The "Num Lock" key at the top left of the keypad controls this light.

With the light off the keys work as cursor movement keys, it's only with the light on that the keys are numeric.

The default settings of the Num Lock state are usually controlled in BIOS. If you are happy about changing BIOS settings then do it.

Thank you so much. What a simple thing to do and the problem is solved. Now that I think about it my old computer might have been like that too but I never had to turn on the lock. You helped me so much because I find it much easier to use those numbers. Now I feel like such a dummy lol I didn't want to start messing when everything works so good. My old one was 5 years old and it just kept giving me troubles so it's nice to just do things and not have to worry. This is my first Dell but I had heard good things plus all our local schools use them. Thanks again and now I know where to go when I need more help. Hopefully not too soon.  Lynda
