Can DSL cause slowdowns?

We have a network of about 15 Dell Dimensions. Nine of them are set up to use our DSL Internet connection. Since we set up the DSL service, those PCs are all experiencing random severe slowdowns. Only the PCs set up for DSL have the problem, and each of them are also set up with ZoneAlarm.

However: we've uninstalled ZoneAlarm and still have the problem, and we lost the DSL line for a week from a lightning strike/Verizon strike combo and still had the problem. I've checked system resources; the problem will occur on a freshly booted machine with 80% resources free. Things don't look so easy any more.

Any ideas?

When you say "slowdowns", is it the internet connection that is slowing down or the pc itself?

Sorry; it is the PC itself. It becomes almost motionless, with 90+second pauses between actions and results.

In your Norton Antivirus options, uncheck the option to scan files when "Created or Downloaded", and see if this affects the problem at all.

If not, you may want to try eliminating programs starting up in the background that could be causing problems. On one of the problem machines, go to START | RUN, and in the Open box type "MSCONFIG" and click OK. Click the Startup tab, and remove the checks to nonessential programs, or programs that you do not use normally. Click OK, and restart when prompted. You can continue removing items (except for ScanRegistry, LoadPowerProfile, and SystemTray) until the problem clears up.
