Can't set desired screen resolution
I have a Dell Dimension 4550 with Windows XP and just bought a Dell SE 198 WFP flat screen monitor for it. I want to set my screen resolution to 1440 x 900, but my Display Settings dialog doesn't offer any choices higher than 1152 x 864. I have installed the driver that came with the monitor, and also downloaded and installed the latest driver for the display adapter, which is a 32MB ATI Rage 128 Ultra. What can I try next?

The Rage 128 class does not natively support 1440x900. You will have to set a custom resolution in the ATI utility (I thinnk its CCC). It still may not let you, i am not sure anyone would have re-written drivers for that res because a rage128 came out MANY years prior to Widescreen. I guess its possible the cards firmware may limit this too. Personally I would spring a few dollars for a new card.

Hi njwwarner, On the monitor there is 4 buttons, the last two are minus and plus. Try pressing the second button, that will bring up a menu. Use the plus to bring you down to factory reset. It will also tell you what your screen resolution is, if that fails phone Dell support.

Yes, I've done that, and I can see that the monitor is displaying at 1152 x 864. I want to know if there is another driver I can install that will let me set my Display Settings to the optimum resolution, 1440 x 900. Or do I need to get a new graphics card?

Do you connect a "KVM switch" in between the monitor and your computer(s) ?

Graphics card is ok, Its your monitor. Your graphics card works with your monitor, if your resolution is supposed to be, lets say, 1680 x 1050 like mine. Then your graphics card will display that, what is happening here is your monitor is set to display 1152 x 864 and your graphics card is working with your monitor.

The "Factory Reset" choice in the monitor's menu keeps it at 1152 x 864. And the Settings screen of my Display Properties has a slider whose maximum setting is 1152 x 864. Is there another way to change it?

No, I have one computer and one monitor. Would a KVM switch help?

Hi njwarner, Then there is an fault with your monitor, because Dell says that monitor can give you a display of 1440 x 0900, see HERE. The only thing that you can do now, is to give Dell Support a ring, and also check to see if they gave you the right monitor.
