Cannot display this video mode

Ever since an update for NVIDIA came through Windows Update on 8-26 I can not boot into Safe Mode. When I get to the place where my login page should appear I get a black page with the following on it:

Auto Detect (Analog Input)     Cannot display this video mode    Optimum resolution 1680 x 1050 60 Hz

I rolled it back and that didn't help. I contacted Microsoft and was told to download the latest NVIDIA driver. I went to my account at the Dell site and took a snapshot of the driver on that site recommended for me and sent it to Microsoft. The gal answered and said it was also outdated and gave me the link to Nvidia for the driver I should have. I installed it and it's still the same. I can't get into Safe Mode.

I have a Dell XPS 410   Monitor is Dell E207 WFP and I believe it is 20"

It seems to me like the driver shown for my computer on the Dell site should be the one to use, even if it is not the latest, but I followed Microsoft instructions. The one I used is GeForce/ION Driver Release 256/driver date 7-9-2010. The one recommended on my Dell page is R143203. The date, I think was Feb. of 2007.

Vista Home Premium SP2

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Please don't suggest a restore because there were 57 updates that came through Windows Update on 8-26 and I don't know if one of them also caused this or not, but ...

All my restore points were erased and I can not make a manual restore point. It says: Could not create the scheduled task for the following reason: The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with. (0x80041321)

It would be helpful if you listed your system & video card model. Did you remove the old driver prior to installing the new one? You might need to use "Drive Sweeper" or something similar to fully remove it.

The lastest best video drivers are always on the manufacturer's site - Not Dell's.
