Cannot get computer to recognize IPOD

I have a Dimension 4700C that I purchased last year -  I just bought a new IPOD last week.  Whenever I try to connect it to my USB port, I get the message 'USB Device not recognized'.  I get the same message when I try any of the 7 other ports.  I have tried everything I can think of, even went as far as re-installing Windows XP to try and solve this problem.

I have another notebook computer, and when I connect the IPOD to that it recognizes and works fine, so I dont think it is the IPOD.

Is there anyone who has experienced this same problem?

Did the suggested site work?  I have tried a dozen times to get the IPOD recognized and failed at every attempt.

Has anybody had this problem and finally gotten it to work?

unistall all the software and drivers and go into device manager and unistall the ipod, will say unknown usb device.  reboot and then install all the software from the ipod and reboot again then connect your ipod, be sure to leave the disc in the drive as it may need to acess the driver information

Thanks.  I tried that several times.  I still get a repeat message to reinstall the software and it is there and I have uninstalled rebooted,  left the disk in, and the it will not recognize the software.  It tells me to reinstall.  I thought I was missing a step so I had another person repeat the whole process from scratch, it was still ano go.  Thaks for the tip.  I am really frustrated.

Thanks everyone for the info.  Unfortunately none of it worked for me.  However, I did notice something:

I have an external USB 100GB Maxtor Harddrive connected to my system.  If I unplug this drive and then plug the ipod in, it seems to work fine.  If I plug the connect the drive, and then try to connect the IPOD, I get the same 'unrecgonized' USB device message.  So I guess I can either have the drive plugged in or the IPOD.  The problem is that all of my music files are on the harddrive.

Is this a common problem?  Does anyone have a fix for this?  Do I need to add another card with additional USB / Firewire ports?

Try using a powered USB hub.

The 2 devices may be pulling more power than the 500ma available.
