Canon Scanner problem with WIA

I have connected by Canon scanner to my Dimension 4550 with XP Pro.  I used the Canon twain driver the and the Canon Scan Gear tool box application and it works.  My problem is that there is no association with Windows WIA.  When I go to control panel/scanners and cameras and right click on the Canon scanner I only get two choices ...  delete and properties. I think that I should also get a choice (get image from scanner) that will allow me to scan using the WIA software application.  On properties I get four tabs....  general, events, preferences, color management. I click "test scanner" on the general tab and it finds the scanner and indicates that it passed the test.   Could the Canon driver or application be killing Windows WIA or is my scanner too old (3.5 years old) for WIA?  Thanks for your ideas and suggestions ...

maggiemtnman,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.

Not sure but I would check to make sure that you have the latest drivers and software for this device. You may be able to use older drivers and software under compatability mode but newer drivers and software written for the current version of windows would work the best.

Thanks for the reply.  I previously down loaded the latest drivers which are for XP.   I wonder if the Canon twain driver or the Scan Gear Tool Box are prohibiting the Windows WIA application from working.  I have a Logitech web camera and WIA works fine with it from the scanners and cameras Wizard in Control Panel.  Any more ideas?  Thanks

maggiemtnman-

For what it's worth, my new Canon 5000F scanner has the same options through the control panel. I haven't encountered anything I can't easily do with the scanner, though, either through the tool box or twain.

Rob, thanks for your reply.  My friend has a newer canon scanner N1240U and it came with a CD that had a WIA driver/application with it.  It said not to install the Canon twain driver if using the WIA cd.  I did not get that option because it was not availabe at the time that I bought my scanner.  Canon told me that they offered the WIA cd for Win XP because the first version of XP did not offer it.  But they said that there should be a WIA opton in control panel on my system.  My friend does have the WIA option available upon right click in control panel that says "scan image".  Maybe this is just not an option available if you use Scan Gear Tool Box.  The reason that I started this thread is that sometimes I would hang up the computer with 100% cpu utilization when trying to scan.  There was an obvious problem like a memory leak.  I thought that it was an interaction between Scan Gear tool box and another application.  But it would still happen if there were no other application running.  I then uninstalled Dell Suppport 2.0 and the problem when away.  Dell Support 2.0 somehow causes a problem with Canon Scan Gear Tool box.  This is what got me started on the idea of using WIA.  Maybe the solution for me will be to just not use Dell Support 2.0 ... it is not much use to me anyway because it drives me crazy with Alert Messages all the time that are not real.  Thanks for taking the time to respond ........ george

George-

The Dell Support software originally installed on my 4600 was buggy and annoying and of questionable usefulness. I have long since removed it and certainly haven't missed it one bit.
