Compatible Processors
Hi all,
I've got a Dell XPS 420 desktop with an Intel Q6600 in it. However I'm wanting to upgrade it. However I cant find the details of my motherboard which tells me possible compatible upgrades.
Could someone please tell me the restrictions/socket type and information for it so I can look for a suitable upgrade.
Thanks

In theory, any of the processors listed here may work (click on the "compatible products" link on the left):
http://ark.intel.com/products/chipsets/2900
Also, note the potential restrictions on processors with the listed L2 Cache:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps420/en/OM/HTML/appendix.htm#wp1057813
The fact that the BIOS release notes indicate updates for Yorkfield (6MB/12MB cache versions) and Wolfdale (3MB/6MB cache versions) processors in A06 lead me to believe that the above-listed L2 cache restrictions either are not so strict or were lifted in a previous BIOS update - probably any one of the previous, as A02, A03, and A04 all list support for "new" or "additional" processors, although it does not list specifically which ones.
All this does not necessarily mean that any/all of the processors on the Intel list will work, but I suspect that they will.
Note 1: Do not try processors NOT on the Intel list of compatible products - they definitely won't work (that includes all i-Series processors.
Note 2: Do not try upgrading the processor until you have upgraded your BIOS to A07. You do not have to do each update individually ... A07 contains all updates from previous versions.
The Q9650 would probably be your best option (3.0GHz clock vs. 2.4, 12MB cache vs. 8MB, 1333MHz FSB vs. 1066), unless you are willing/able to spend on average probably twice the price for the Extreme version - QX9650.

Update to current Bios is Highly recommended BEFORE changing processor.
