Computer hangs during boot up if device is plugged into USB port

Everytime I leave an external hard drive connected to my Inspiron 530s via a USB port, the PC locks up during the DELL splash screen upon power up.  This also happens if I plug something into the 22" Ultrasharp monitor.

Are there drivers I need to update?

Unless you have a need to boot from a USB device, you can try going to setup (F2 on start-up) and setting the USB to "No Boot".  The computer tends to wait for quite a while for non-existent boot code otherwise.

F2 on computer start-up.  It may take a while to find depending on the complexity of your setup menu, but it must be there somewhere.

This doesn't seem to help.  'No Boot' for USB isn't an option, unless I'm looking in the wrong area.

My pics from that menu are:

1. Hard Disk Boot Priority [Press Enter]

2. First Boot Device - [CD ROM]

3. Second Boot Device - [HARD DISC]

4. Third Boot Device - [Disabled]

5. Fourth Boot Device - [Disabled]

...    by the way I have 2 SATA discs, but I don't think this is causing the issue.  I've had this issue ever since I purchased the machin this summer.  However, now I want to leve some USB items connected when shutting down and powering up.

One of the things I enjoy about this forum is learning new things.  If you don't have this option, setting your boot menu selections is the best you can do.  You don't mention having a USB device in your boot setting, but according to the on-line manual the first thing in it is removable device priority.  You won't see that line unless your device is connected, so you need to connect the device, restart the machine, and hit F2 at the appropriate time.  Once you see how it is set perhaps you can disable it from booting, or at least move it to the end of the list.

I'm afraid you misunderstood.  You're telling me about the boot menu.  The setting I'm talking about is in the USB section in which you can tell the machine to turn the USB controller on, off, or as I suggested, NO BOOT.  I know mine has it; I had to disable it when I attached a USB printer that has internal storage.

Thank Jack,

USB section of the F2 Boot Menu?  or in the Device Drivers under control panel?

In the USB section there are only 2 options

 1. USB Controller [enabled/disabled]

 2. USB Opeation [High/Low]

I don't see where I can do what u say...

I'm new to the forum, but I've been around computers for quite some time...  however, this is still puzzling me.  I did find this in menu's; so I put 'Removable' as the 3rd device, so it looks like this...

1. Hard Disk Boot Priority [Press Enter]

2. First Boot Device - [CD ROM]

3. Second Boot Device - [HARD DISC]

4. Third Boot Device - [REMOVABLE]

5. Other Boot Device - [Disabled]

It still hangs up on the splash screen if I have anything lplugged into the monitors USB ports.  If I try to leave the Western Digital Mybook plugged in, the computer is locked up at the DELL splash screen.  IF I leave it disconnested, everything works fine.  The MyBook works if I wait and plug it in after the boot up is completed.  I've been running out of ideas to try.  Appreciate the help though...

I'm sure the computer is waiting to see if your device will send it some boot code.  I wish I had some better ideas, but regrettably nothing comes to mind.

Good luck to you!

There is no 'No Boot' option in the 530 BIOS as there is on may Dells.

make sure you have the latest BIOS, and disconnect an power cycle everything. Perform a Flee Power Operation on the PC (remove power, hold power button 10 seconds, release, plug power back in).

Do connect 1 item at a time, and make sure not to use long USB cables. Even 10' cables may cause issues.

good luck, hope this helps
