Computer won't shut down

I hope this is the right category, sorry if it isn't but getting desparate.

On several occasions my computer gets locked up, I ctrl alt del to end task, do so then try to shut down. The computer starts the shut down procedure then stops. I can't turn it off by using the button. So I get irritated and unplug the darn thing. I'm probably not supposed to do this...

I did the restore task as per directions in the troubleshooting hints. I still have this problem once in a while. What gives?

If you're using XP then check out the site here for information on shutdown problems.

If you're using 9x or ME then check the site here....

Minkhill:

My computer does the same thing at times. When you shut down, does your computer play a sound file? If so, you may have a corrupted sound file. This is not unusual and happens from time to time.

You didn't mention what operating system you are running, but assuming you are running Win98, try this:

Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel-Sounds. Search for the file that is associated with "Exit Windows" and either choose another wav file or choose "None". Click Apply and OK yourself out. See if that fixes the problem.

FYI - It may not be a good idea to just unplug your computer. If you are stuck again and have a reset button, push the reset button and let Windows reload. You will probably go through the Scandisk process as well. Once your system has reloaded, try shutting down again. Please post back if you have further problems. Good luck.

if you don't have a reset button, press and HOLD the power button until it turns off.
