Computer won't start up

I have a dimension 2400, I bought it in july... When I left, the computer was on, when I came home it was off... so I hit the button and nothing... not a beep, no lights in the back , no nothing. I called dell they sent me a new power supply, I installed it, and it is still the same. So they said they sent the wrong one and sent the right one. I installed it, it still does the same thing. The only light is the green light on inside the computer on the motherboard. That is the one and only light, no beeps, nothing even tries to start or boot up. just one green light on the motherboard on the inside of the computer, and silence...

no I was informed I had.. key word there had a 90 day warranty. I thought it was 1 year , but they say 90 days. this issue has been going on since november . the tech says if it isn't the power supply it is either the motherboard or the switch/button that turns it on. I have ordered a new motherboard, and I guess I will try that , I just wanted some advise to see if anyone else might have had the same problem and got it fixed and this board will actually fix it. because I'm skeptical after the power supplies didn't. thanks for the reply .

If you're still under warranty--which it sounds like you are--then you'll need to continue to work with Dell tech support to resolve this. Seems to me after three power supplies, they'd start looking elsewhere for a problem.

You can try manually connecting the power switch (if you feel up to that).e

This may sound dumb, but are you sure you are getting proper power INTO the computer?

Do you have a voltmeter to check the voltages on the PS connectors?

I would try disconnecting removing everything (all cards and drives). Power up with just the motherboard and a HD. If that doesn't work, try just a drive or just the motherboard.

I have my old computer hooked up to the same cord... same monitor everything just switched the pc's out and it works fine. and this is the 3 power supply. so I was more or less going by what the dell guy said. He had me to take out the memory and the cards and modems and stuff and try it, and it still done the same, I have not disconnected any of the drives and just tried the motherboard or hd by itself. I might do that though. The new motherboard is on it's way . so I am thinking of doing the test on the power supply they give on here about the black and green and seeing if it works, anything else you can think of for me to try let me know.

I don't think it can by itself

Sounds like the motherboard is a prime suspect.

Can the PS run a HD by itself? You should be able to hear it spin up.

It was the motherboard. I ordered it from dell, They told me it was the power supply. and I guess it could be, but for me it wasn't , and you just described the same symptons my had , exactly the same, I think they are having a run of motherboards. I have heard from over ten people with the same problem. I emailed dell and told them what the tech told me and what I needed and got a part number ( the tech should give you one if you can understand them, I couldn't so I had to have them email it to me) and I called the number they gave also and gave them the part number, they shipped the board and I put it in and it has worked fine ever since, matter fact, I'm on it now .. good luck with yours. they probably will want to try a power supply, Look on here and do a test where you jump the wires and see if the fan starts up on the power supply, if it does, change the board. Let me know how it goes

polar121:

Did Dell charge you for the motherboard or did you get it free? If they charged you, I would take it up with customer service that, even though the system is out of warranty, it had been misdiagnosed under warranty and is therefore Dell's responsibility.

to be honest it was the easiest way, and misdiagnosis? they said it was the power supply most likely, if not. it was the motherboard. if not that the power switch. I would order the part they said, they would cancel the order, in two weeks I'd call back and they'd tell me that it was canceled after I didn't recieve the part. this happened twice. I couldn't understand them at all hardly, they do not speak good english. I ask about them giving me the motherboard and they flat out said no. I would ask to speak to a manager , they would said hold please and hang up on me. point being, they flat out didn't care, they have the worse customer service I have ever experienced with anything. I paid for the motherboard to get the situation resolved so I could get back on my quickbooks on my computer, I had no choice I was losing money , I explained this to them and they didn't care. Dell customer service is horrible, I do like the computers , but I don't think I'll buy another one from them on the simple fact of how they are to deal with if you have a problem, If you order a computer, you get someone who speaks good english I think from this country even, if you have a problem, they must send your call to pakistan or India or something and they are so hard to understand. They were aslo rude to me and if I put up a fuss about anything they hung up on me. In addition to that I must add that I did speak to one lady, I cannot pronouce her name so I won't try and spell it, that was very helpful and courteous . but that was the only one. Needless to say, I won't be calling customer service for a refund, but when I buy 6 more computers this summer for my business , I won't buy a dell either.
