Computer won't wake up after long sleep
This has been going on for a few days now. The computer wakes up fine in the day when it is asleep for a short time but in the morning it will not wake up. I cannot turn off the on/off button on the CPU and the only way I can get the computer up and running is to pull the power plug and quickly turn on the CPU if I don't do that quickly the monitor starts and then immediately goes into power saving mode and I have to cut the power again. I cannot get onto the driver download page despite trying for most of the day getting an error message nor download the diagnostic tool. I called technical support and the guy there said that the reason I can't access the drivers is because there is something wrong with my computer but I have no problems with other internet applications. The computer is a Dell E190S and is about 3 years old. Any suggestions welcome and please be explicit as to what to do as things like "change the settings on the BIOS" means that I need to spend an hour finding out where the BIOS is! Thanks

Hi Mahnrut,
The E190S is a monitor. We need the model of your desktop and operating system.

In case this helps: this is exactly what I need to do for windows to start.
Turn off the power- wait a minute or so.
Plug it in again and immediately press the CPU on/off button which hasn't lit although it was before it was unplugged.
As windows starts if I just wait it within a few seconds goes back to power saver mode.
Way to stop this is when the screen for reboot comes and gives the option of F2 or F12 I press F2 and then it proceeds to open normally.
I have called a tech person athough not scheduled yet but I am hoping to save this expense! Thanks for any help.

When your system has been in sleep mode overnight, does the power button show anything? White or amber, steady or blinking?

No blinking and a whitish green color.

Sleep mode is indicated by a blinking white light, so it does not sound to me like your desktop is going into sleep mode. Can you try putting the system into sleep mode from the start menu and tell me if you get the blinking white light?

osprey4 thanks for staying with this - was out for the evening hence the delay in this reply. As suggested I went to start to put it into sleep mode that way but inadvertantly pressed the shut down button but what was interesting was that when the cpu on/off button went off for that I could put it on again and it booted up normally without going into power saving mode almost immediately. I then went back to Start and pressed the right button and put it to sleep but couldn't resume as before either by jiggling the mouse/key board or pushing the on/off button which wasn't blinking. So I unplugged it and to stop it reverting to power saving mode pressed F2 again and got the message :The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed" and the highlighted option of "Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" - no menu but just windows opening up.
Hope this throws more light on the issue. I checked the power settings and they are to go into hybrid sleep after a certain time and when it does this in the day there is no problem with it waking up - it just seems to balk after the night sleep. Thanks again for your help.

When you manually put the system into sleep mode, did you get the blinking white light? After it had been sleeping a while, was the light still blinking white?

The on/off button at the top of the CPU does not blink in either of those conditions. Thanks.

So I think the system is not actually going into sleep mode. What it is doing is locking up. I think the fastest path forward and the best long term solution is for you to back up all of your files and perform a factory reset of the operating system. This will require you to reinstall all of your applications as well. In all honesty, it will take less time to do this than to troubleshoot the existing problem.
Short term, I would simply power the system down when you are not using it and power it up when you need it.

Thanks. That explanation seems to make sense and performing a factory reset of the OS seems to be a sensible way out. Backing up is something I do regularly - just need to let it do its thing but reinstalling all the applications is something else!
I really appreciate your help OSPREY4.
