Confused about System Capabilities - Optiplex 320

I have a freind's system to help with.  They feel it is slow and of course I'll do all the software "stuff", but I'm blown away that a system bought in early 2007 has only a Pentium D Smithfield 820, and 2 Gig Max Ram!

It currently has 2MB PC2-5300 , so I guess PC2-6400 would possibly help a smidgen.  Does anyone know if the system can "really" handle more than 1 Gig / slot?

The HD is 7200 RPM, so there's no need to up it.

Does moving up the ladder on the CPU make any sense?  I understand it can also take Intel P4 Prescott, or Cedar Mill.  I haven't priced them yet and wanted to ask you folks if it made sense first.

Thanks!

Dell's specifications for the Optiplex 320, give 2gb [2 x 1gb modules] as the maximum supported RAM, see HERE

Crucial gives 4gb [2 x 2gb modules] as the maximum RAM support, see HERE

Thanks.  Yes I saw the two differing specification which is part of what confused me.  Has anyone really used 2 GB in an Optiplex 320 slot?

Also, any suggestions on the CPU?  I'm astounded it has only a Pentium D - that was what my very old computer had and this system is only  1.5 yrs old.

I've been looking at video cards and locally can get:

  • Galaxy GEForce 8400GS 256 Turbo Cache DDR2 PCIe Low Profile for 14.99 AR
  • EVGA eGEForce 8400 512 DDR2 PCIe for 24.99 AR
  • PNY Vetro GEForce 9400GT 512 DDR2 PCIe 2.0 34.99 AR

Which would be best value for this system, or is it overkill if I can't change the CPU?  They are not gamers.

Thanks to all for reading and providing your thoughts.

Any idea which is correct?  I've read elsewhere that the 320 will support 4gb but only on a 64bit OS.  Any idea if that's correct?
