You need to plug the cable into a DVI port on the video card, using the supplied adapter. As an alternative, you can remove the video card, afterwhich the port you tried to use will become active.

Thank you Rdunnill, I may have to try removing the video card because I am plugging the monitor into the video card with the adapter but it's still not working even when I do that.  That's why I thought maybe I was missing something.

Weird ... usually the DVI-to-VGA adapter should work, unless the DVI port isn't capable of analog signals. In that event, however, removing the video card should work.
