Connecting An Old Monitor To A New Computer

Can I connect a Dell 15" Flat Panel E151FPB to my XPS 8500?

I recently purchased an XPS 8500 and received it today.  I ordered a monitor but it's not due in until mid February (pure torture).  I figured I could connect one of the older monitors I have to my computer until then but I'm not having any luck.

There is an additional video card with the computer, and an adapter (no wire, just a VGA-DVI adapter).  When I plug the monitor in to the regular VGA port, a message comes on the screen telling me about the additional video card and telling me to turn the computer off and connect the monitor to the video cart port via the adapter.  It says once I have done this I should not see that message and should be smooth sailing.

However, when I do that, I get 'No Signal'.  Am I missing a cord?  Am I doing something wrong?  Is something already broken?  Should I just suck it up and wait for the new monitor?  I'm lost and want to see if there's any other options while I'm waiting for the new monitor to come in.

Thank you in advance.

You need to plug the cable into a DVI port on the video card, using the supplied adapter. As an alternative, you can remove the video card, afterwhich the port you tried to use will become active.

Thank you Rdunnill, I may have to try removing the video card because I am plugging the monitor into the video card with the adapter but it's still not working even when I do that.  That's why I thought maybe I was missing something.

Weird ... usually the DVI-to-VGA adapter should work, unless the DVI port isn't capable of analog signals. In that event, however, removing the video card should work.
