Connecting two IDE devices at the same time

Good afternoon,

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX620 Desktop and wanted to connect two IDE devices, for example a cd burner and an IDE disk on the same IDE connector using the same power source. What happens is that if you connect two IDE devices the PC does not recognize one of them and gives error on startup, always have to carry the F1 to proceed if one of them off the PC now recognizes. Did not possible to connect two IDE at the same time? It is that I have two SATA disks and works flawlessly in each of their connection.

Could you help me

The error message is:

DRIVE 2 not Found Parallel ATA, PATA - 0 (PRI IDE MASTER)

DRIVE 3 not Found Parallel ATA, PATA - 1 (PRI IDE SLAVE)

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

And yes, both IDE devices are jumpered for "Cable Select".

If I disconnect one of IDE device, the PC start without this error message, but if I connect both show this message

Exactly what error message are you getting?

Are the IDE drives both jumpered for "Cable Select", and not Master/Slave ?

Hi Xequemate,

One of those devices is probably bad. You need to try them one at a time to figure out which one it is. The other possibility is that the cable is bad.

The manual says you can have 2 IDE drives on the one ribbon cable.

Are you sure the ribbon cable is connected correctly with the colored (red or purple) stripe on the same side as pin 1 on both drives?

Reboot and press F2 to open BIOS setup. Use arrow keys to navigate and see what's listed for Drive 0 through n when both drives are connected.  Then go down further and make sure the SATA hard drive is first in the boot sequence.

Be sure to save any changes before exiting BIOS Setup

EDIT: Opsrey types faster than I do!

Hello OSPREY4 About the devices are all ok, because if I select the F1 key in the error message the PC starts and when I go to folder My Computer I can see those two devices, the CD burner and the hard disk. About the cable that's all ok also I already change by other and keep the same. I already think that is possible the PC (by power supply) can't support so many devices, because I have two hard disk SATA connected, and I want those two IDE devices also? Thanks for your help

There should be no problem having adequate power to support four drives. So that is not the problem.

My suggestion is to boot to the BIOS and check if both IDE drives are recognized. If you see something listed as "unknown", then that indicates a problem.

You might try resetting BIOS:

  1. Reboot, press F2 and go into BIOS setup. Copy down all the current settings
  2. Power off and unplug
  3. Press/hold power button for ~15 sec
  4. Open case and remove motherboard battery
  5. Press/hold power button for ~30 sec
  6. With both IDE drives connected, reinstall the battery (right-side-up!)
  7. Assuming it boots up properly, go back into BIOS setup and confirm the settings match what you copied. Be sure to save any changes before exiting setup.

The devices need to be set to cable select.

80 wire UDMA cables should be used.

The Blue Connector goes to motherboard

The Black Connector goes to Drive 0

The Grey Connector goes to Drive 1

All Drives Set to CABLE Select

SATA Drive Setting must be Combination to mix IDE Drives with Sata Drives.

Which Model are we talking about?

SATA Operation

Configures the operation mode of the integrated hard-drive controller.

Normal — The hard-drive controller is configured for native mode. This mode provides the highest drive performance and most flexibility.

Combination — The hard-drive controller is configured for combination mode.

This mode enables compatibility with some older operating systems that do not support SATA drives.

The factory default setting is Normal.

NOTE: Changing this setting affects the order in which drives are listed.

However, system setup does not reflect these changes until after a reboot.

@Speed

You're a little late to this discussion. The OP already said the IDE drives are jumpered to Cable Select.

Don't know how SATA Operation is set, but what does that have to do with installing IDE drives? Whatever the current SATA setting is, one IDE drive on the ribbon works, but two IDE drives together don't work.
