Copying a file to disk

Can anyone help this dummy by giving instructions on how to copy a Word Perfect file to hard disk?  Every time I give the copy command, it tells me I'm not authorized to do this.

You didn't provide any system specs so all we can do is offer general procedures.

Although it would appear that a CD can work like a floppy diskette, it can't and probably the reason you are having problems getting the file on a CD.

You will need to save the file to the hard drive and then create a "data' CD with your CD burning program (probably Roxio or Sonic, depending on what was supplied by Dell if you have a CD burner).  When you create the data CD, you "copy" files from the hard drive to the CD-R or CD-RW, however I don't use or recommend CD-RW discs as they are prone to losing format and/or data.

Thanks for responding.  Frustration caused me to neglect the specs.  I'm using a Dell Dimension E510, Windows XP Pro and Word Perfect 6.1.  I guess I'm technologically challenged because I thought that when I created a file on Word Perfect, it was already saved to the hard drive.  I just want to copy it to a disk so I can send it to someone.  Could you explain in simple terms how I can do that?

Files in wordprocessors (or other programs) are not automatically created (some programs do create backup files after a certain period of time).  Once you create a wordprocessor file, in this case, you have to save it (to the hard drive) with a file name.  Once you have the file saved you then can create the CD.

Use a CD-R blank, load it on your CD (and/or DVD) burner drive.  Open Roixo (or whatever other program you have for CD writing (burning) and select "create a Data CD".  Select the created wordprocessor file to be burned to the CD-R and then burn (create) the CD.  You can then send it to someone.   The Roxio Help files are there if you have more questions.

ADDED:  One thing I forgot, WordPerfect files are not univerally recognized, the person you are sending it to must have WordPerfect to read the file.  If they don't have WordPerfect, save the file as an "ASCII" or plain text file.  Microsoft Word is more univerally accepted, the legal profession still uses WordPerfect but most commercial businesses use MS Word.

Thank you very much for the assistance.  Worked on it last night and by trial and error, a CD was realized.  (I have Sonic.)  When I inserted the CD to be sure it actually recorded the document, I had to insert my Microsoft Office CD, and then the document came up in Word.  We'll see what happens on the other end - worst case scenario, they'd have to use the hard copy and retype the entire document!
