Corrupted or Missing Systemced File (Windows 2K)
Basically here is the story:
I have had it up to here with Windows 2000. It seems incredibly unreliable. I keep getting the following message, not every time I boot but just about. ""Windows 2000 Could Not Start Because the Following File is Missing or Corrupt: \Winnt\System32\Config\Systemced". I have to run in console mode from the Windows 2000 CD and rename "system" and "system.alt" and copy the good files from C:\windows\repair\regback (this is where the Emergency Repair Disk puts the backup copy on the hard drive). I would exit and reboot and everything would come up OK except once the file C:\windows\system32\config\software got corrupted and I had to copy that out of the same backup directory back into the Config directory. The problem is that I have to do these administrative things every 6th or 7th boot up. As you can imagine this get old fast and Microsoft has to have a more permanent remedy. I checked my "Device Manager" and found that I have the "Promise Technology Inc. Ultra66 IDE Controller". I have heard that this could be the culprit. I noticed that the vendor says it is compatible for the Win95 and Win98, I don't see where it says its Win2K compatible. Can you confirm this. Any way it would be nice to figure out why the system hangs after 4 or 5 bootups. I will tell you that I upgraded from Windows98 to Windows2000 and converted my drive from Fat32 to NTFS. I have done the knowledge base article from Microsoft several times: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q269075
Any idea why this continues to happen? Here is my system configuration:
