DVD drive not recognized?

Question

I suddenly have the issue of my dvd drive not working. when checking Device Manager i see that there is an error with the following message. 'Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)' i googled around to see if its something i could fix, i came across the option of uninstalling the drive and then back again. i did this but it didnt make a difference. and when i try and update the driver, it says i have the most up to date one. as i'm not a PC techie to say the least, hoping there' s a solution i can try myself. unless i'd have to contact Dell support directly and have someone come over. I appreciate any help!!! if useful, the drive is listed as 'PLDS DVD+-RW DS-8A8SH

Have you tried restarting the computer in Safe Mode, and selecting Last Known Good Configuration?

hello, i have a windows 8.1 Inspiron One 23.

looks like the "last known good configuration" thing was removed for this OS so that dont help. figures!! as for the other poster, i tried the links provided and the "fix it" thing didnt work, despite the fact it told me it fixed the issue. and i tried the hardware and device trouble shooter and that didnt work either.

my guess is i'll have to contact Dell about sending someone over.
