Deciding between RDRAM and SDRAM.
TRUTH ABOUT RDRAM
I have just got my XPS T750r, but there is a long story.
I ordered my XPS B733r system in November, 1999. I changed some components to the system twice, and estimated shipping date was changed to January 19th. I was really excited about the B system because of RDRAM. On January 19th when I checked the order status on the web, estimated shipping date was delayed to March 3. So I called sales manager about the system to argue whether I should wait two more additional month which I already waited two month, total of 4 month! I could not believe how Dell acted. So I changed to XPS T750r with 256MB memory, better and more components, it costs almost same as the XPS B733r which is around $3100. In B system, you only get 128MB RDRAM which is pretty controversial about the speed. It is fast alright but 128MB RDRAM won't beat my 256MB SDRAM for sure. I also researched for 2 months about the new RDRAM. They say that 128MB RDRAM is only 3 percent faster than 128MB SDRAM, it is because RDRAM is capable of processing complicated graphics faster but not significant difference. Having 256MB SDRAM will kill that only-128MB RDRAM system. By buying RDRAM system, you are actually paying patent fee to Rambus Corporation. Some B systems have problem in boot up because of incompatibility between Intel's 820 chipset and RDAM. Don't you want have more and better components and faster system?
My XPS T750r system configuration:
->PIII 750r
->256MB SDRAM
8x/4x/32x CD-RW
Harman Kardon HK595 Speaker
8X DVD-ROM
SB LIVE! Value Digital
Conexant V.90/56K Modem
->32MB nVIDIA geFORCE Graphics Card
P991 Trinitron Monitor
27.3GB with ATA66 Controller Card
Windows 98 SE with MS Office SBE 2000 & BOOKSHELF
System configuration for what I WAS going to get:
->PIII 733r
->128MB RDRAM
8x/4x/32x CD-RW
Harman Kardon HK595 Speaker
8X DVD-ROM
SB LIVE! Value Digital
Conexant V.90/56K Modem
->32MB nVIDIA TNT2 Graphics Card
P991 Trinitron Monitor
27.3GB with ATA66 Controller Card
Windows 98 SE with MS Office SBE 2000 & BOOKSHELF
Both system costs the same. You choose which is suitable? I was very influenced by the "->" components above.
