Delayed Write Failed -- Windows 2000 Pro SP2
I've been experiencing an ongoing problem over the last several months, requiring five reinstalls of Windows 2000 on my XPS 600T. I usually get "delayed write failed" errors prior to the system crashing (and requiring a complete reinstall). Here s an excerpt of the relevant event log entry:
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Ftdisk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 50
Date:
Time:
User: N/A
Computer: XXXXX
Description:
{Lost Delayed-Write Data} The system was attempting to transfer file data from buffers to \Device\HarddiskVolume2. The write operation failed, and only some of the data may have been written to the file.
After the second reinstall, I replaced the factory hard drive with a an IBM 75GXP Deskstar 46.1GB Ultra ATA and purchased an ATA 100 Promise IDE card. The problems did not disappear.
I am more than certain something is wrong with the motherboard, possibly the memory controller. Dell technical support is absolutely clueless as to what the problem is and will not acknowledge any incompatibilities with Windows 2000.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has relevant name, and mailing address at Dell to bring to light an unresolved tech problem, it too would be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Teo.

What is the source of the data you are attempting to copy? How is the hard drive within your system partitioned, and with what filesystem has it been formatted (this may help me understand why the destination drive is indicated in the above error as \Device\HarddiskVolume2, and not \Device\Harddisk0\[partition])?

I've been experiencing the delayed write problem since Windows 2000 release, and has happened with SP1 as well as SP2. I slipstreamed SP2 into my Windows 2000 setup, and installed the OS from the other partition. The (previous three) other installs were performed from the original Windows 2000 CD, with service packs applied afterwards.
Each time I reinstalled, I quick formatted my hard disk(s). I have two partitions, each FAT32. Prior to the first install, I had only one partition. After my first reinstall, I used NTFS, however this did not have any prophylactic effect, and went back to FAT32 by the third reinstall.
As for the error itself, there was no common theme other than not being able to write to an event log file (*.evt), and some other files I cannot remember. To the best of my memory, the machine was idling when the errors occured; IE may have been in the background for at least two of the times, however.
A user suggested that the problem may be tied into a "write cache" feature. Odd thing. I tried running DocMemory (which tests DIMMs too!), to check on my memory sticks, and this program would lock up when testing extended memory region. It could be an incompatibility with Dell systems; It runs fine on my self built PC. Worth taking a look at: http://www.simmtester.com
Some other thoughts ... SpinRite 5, and Norton Utils 2001 show that the computer is fine.
Thanks,
Teo.
