Dell 8250 RAM dilemma...
Hi,
I currently have an old Dell Dimension 8250 that has worked great for the past 10 years now.
Original specs: 533MHz FSB and Pentium 4 @ 3.06GHz with 512MB RDRAM.
About 2 years ago, I upgraded the RAM to 1GB for dirt cheap and have the opportunity to do so again. I understand most will say it's not worth upgrading such an old system (especially because RDRAM is outdated/ridiculously expensive and I could put that money toward a new system), but that's not an option right now and I have a chance to upgrade the RAM again for less than £20.
Currently installed on the motherboard is 4 x 256 RDRAM (PC1066-32), 1GB total.
My option for upgrade is getting 4 x 512MB (PC800-40) sticks that would give me a total of 2GB.
I understand that this system can support up to 2GB of PC800-40 and up to 1.5GB of PC1066-32. It also may be possible for me to get 1.5GB of RAM which is PC1066-32, so would that be better than the 2GB of PC800-40 because it's faster even though I'd have 512MB less?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Watch7ower,
Dell Dimension 8250 is compatible with two types of memory PC800 or PC1066 RDRAM (non-ECC) which has four slots. The maximum memory PC800 can go up to is 2GB. Yes you can go for 1.5GB RAM also.

We can send SpeedStep to jail as he provided this option.
Seriously, PC800-40 you can get 1 GB from Amazon for as low as $32 and add whatever from the same source for a few $ more. Or you can go here for 512MB PC800 ECC 40ns 184-PIN RDRAM RAMBUS for $15 per stick. I can not comment about UK suppliers...
So statement that this memory is not available is complete nonsense, it is somewhat expensive, it is true, but if money is very tight and the end result will just surf the net, plus light processing - I have an answer.
The question was about which option is better and so far no answer provided.

RDRAM is INTEL MAFIA Ram. The Cost of the RAM will be more than the cost of a Brand new Machine with Windows 8.
There are no retail stores anywhere that support this ram. Crucial Specifically Does not carry this anymore.
The Racketeering that went on with this kind of Ram Landed People in jail for 10 years.
