Dell Dimension 9100 Windows 10 Upgrade advice

Hello all, I want to upgrade my PC to the new Windows 10, however there are a few things that I need to update or upgrade to get it working properly. I want to spend as little as possible becuase this computer is very old.

Firstly, when I installed the preview, the video card driver didn't work and the picture was all funny and blurred. It seemed as if the driver was not compatible with Win 10. Do I need to get a new graphics card or is there a way to make my current one compatible with Win 10? The card I am using is a Radeon X300

Secondly, RAM. Currently I am using 1gb of RAM. What do you think is the minimum is to run?

Thank you for your support.

The X300 is slow but it will work with the vista legacy drivers.

This means go to the dell site and install the Dell VISTA32 or VISTA64 X300 video drivers.

You would also have to install directx June 2010

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

You download the file and extract into a folder. Then Run DXsetup.exe from that folder as administrator.  DO NOT EXTRACT To Desktop etc as it will toss 1000's of files there.

And Add legacy direct show in windows features

Control panel,  programs and features,  add features to windows, Under legacy check all the boxes.

I would not recommend anything less than 4 gigs of ram.

A newer card that will enable all the features would be an asus EAH6450.

Asus Silent HD6450.

Thats wrong.  The Auto Detect feature DOES NOT WORK for LEGACY Video cards. All cards up to Radeon HD 5XXX series work but below that directx 10 and 9 cards use a legacy driver.ATI 256MB RADEON X850 XT Platinum Edition, Hyper Memory PCI-Express X16 (DVI/VGA/TV out) Radeon X300 SE, 128MB Radeon X600 SE, RADEON® X600 256MB HYPERMEMORY, 256MB Radeon X600, Radeon X1900XTX 512MB, X1300 Pro 256MB, X1300, X1300 Pro, Dual 512MB Radeon X1950XTX Crossfire, Vista WHQL 8.332 driver from ATI

Have you registered the D9100 for the upgrade? This program will flag any serious problems. My D9100 with  Nvidia 6800 video and 3gb of RAM has passed. What version of Windows are you using? Have you updated the video driver? There are virtually NO Win 10 drivers of any kind available yet. MS have probably included some basic generic drivers in the preview version. I installed into a VMWare virtual partition on my Compaq and had zero problems.

Even when its released older DX9 and DX10 ATI cards must use VISTA Drivers because there are non 7,8,8.1 or 10 drivers and there never will be hense the Legacy Drivers for these.  The best route for Audio and Video is to use the vista drivers.  If there are any upgrades they will be downloaded during windows update.

Enabling Legacy Direct show is required for windows 8, 8.1, 10 as is Directx June 2010 if you want to use a legacy card.  My E510 with X300 and 4 gigs of ram 3.25 gigs useable works fine with windows 10 insider preview 10074.

A 5450 or 6450 card will not only be fully compatible, but will accelerate HD video decoding. If watching streaming video is something you'd like to do, such a card would be a good investment. They can be had at reasonable prices from online suppliers.
