Dell Dimension 9150 boot problems

Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 9150 that fails to boot most of the time.

I turn the PC on by pressing the front panel on/off button, the LEDS show the following sequence

1 4

 34

2 4

123

  34

PC shuts down automatically

PC powers itself on automatically

24

123

PC shuts down automatically

Here is the strange thing. I can now turn the PC on by simply pressing the plastic front panel which shows the LED lights. I've removed the front panel and i can do the same ( turn the PC on) simply by touching the metal casing for the front panel ( housing for the LEDs and 2 USB sockets ).

Once the PC is on, it sometimes shuts itself off automatically even if left idle for a few minutes.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

It only started to do this yesterday and has been a very reliable machine up till now.

Thanks

Steve

There would appear to be something shorting if you can turn it on by just touching areas.  Whatever is allowing that is probably your problem, not something else with the PC or power supply.

Open the case and reseat the cable from the front panel at the motherboard and at the front panel side.  If that doesn't help you may need to replace the front panel power switch assembly, as the next step.

Hi,

I have the same kind of issue. upon booting, I get an alarm signal (a bip) and  3 and 4 let on. The hard disc symbol is also on for a few seconds.

Then nothing happens, it does not start.

Did you solve your issue ? Any clue you can share with me ?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I'll try and help.

I solved the problem by turning off the power to the PC and removing the front panel . Then i  made sure there was nothing that could cause a short circuit between the front panel and the power on circuitry.

I think the problem must have been due to some of the silver foil that appears to be present around the usb sockets. Maybe after prolonged use, some of this silver foil causes a short.

Anyway i solved the problem by tidying up all the foil around the usb sockets and cleaning the front panel ( from behind ).

Let me know if this solves your problem.

Best Regards

Steve
