Dell Dimension E520 System idle process hogs 90%+ cpu every day

Edit: I had already posted this somewhere else but I think it was in the wrong section. I'm worried my newbiness in this forum will have my question go ignored and I would very much rather that not happen. So I deleted the first post I made and reposted here hoping this is the right section. If not, sorry...

Hello...

So I've been having this problem a while with my Dell E520 and regardless whom I asked they always gave me the same answers. Viruses...Spyware...You installed something wrong...You don't know what you're doing...So on and so forth.

Well, today I finally had enough and Googled 'system idle process hogs cpu' and one of the results was a discussion that perhaps it was unsigned drivers causing the problem. They described how to check for unsigned drivers (sigverif) and I did that, and got a list:

1028_dell_xps_dell dm061 (a lot of spacing) .mrk

camd930b.sys

capt930b.sys

cercsr6.sys

dell_xps_dell dm061 (a lot of spacing) .mrk

klif.sys

staropen_x86.sys

windrvr.sys

All are located in c:\windows\system32\drivers . I Googled each one and some turned out to be fine (or so it seems) and the only one that I got flags for being a possible virus was the first one in the list, 1028_dell_xps_dell dm051 (spacing) .mrk. So I looked up for a solution, and found several but I don't know which one to trust that works for MY computer.

I can't even do simple things like log into MSN without having to wait a half hour for the window to load. Or waiting 20+ minutes for an internet page to load, or for logging into something, or logging out...All of this is IF the window(s) doesn't go none-responsive, at which i then have to force close using task manager (and even that freezes up sometimes).

There's always something running in the background since my hard drive light is ALWAYS on, even when I turn every program off and touch nothing, and that prompts my fan to turn on for even simple tasks.

Ok, I run virus/spyware checks EVERY single day, and I've even gotten into that habit of leaving my computer running while I sleep to run scans. They're always clean, and I clean disks/defrag every week if not every day. I clean out cookies and all that jazz as well, and I remove programs installed that I no longer use.

So what gives? Why is my idle process so high to the point I can't do anything? I'm not even sure if the drivers are the problem, so I'm at a complete loss.

Btw, it took me nearly one hour to register and log in because of this...

Keep in mind that I'm slow and dumb, so I apologize if I ask that you be specific/descriptive should you ask me to do anything, I have short term memory loss. I would blame forgetting to have installed a driver after a recent reformat if it were not for having had this problem before then.

Thank you for any help/advice you can offer.

~Mayo

P.S. Most of the time when I peruse tech forums they ask for my dxdiag when I ask a tech question so I'll add that here now to save time. If it was unnecessary then I apologize.

Is there a reason I'm not getting any replies? Did I miss something or...maybe I should go ask elsewhere? Just wondering...

I'd very much like to be able to resolve this soon. I'm still having trouble doing simple tasks since my windows go none responsive and it takes me 10+ min. to close them down via Task Manager or they crash repeatedly.

You didn't do anything wrong.    Just a hazard of all-volunteer forums - sometimes there's a quick answer, sometimes things get missed.   Plus there's no one answer to a sluggish PC, but maybe can point you in the right direction.

System idle process is a red herring - it's how much time the CPU is idling, sort of like a car engine always has to have a minimum idle until you press the accelerator to actually go somewhere.   In task manager the CPU usage always has to total 100%.    So, if you're constantly showing 90% idle process, that means 90% of the time the CPU is just, well, idling and waiting for something real to do.

Which means something else is clogging up your system.

Most of the DxDiag isn't useful, but the memory and page file caught my eye.   It says 502MB, memory which means you have 512MB of physical RAM (the "missing" 10MB is memory that's shared with hardware and not accessible to the operating system).    A few years ago that may have been enough, but modern programs are much more memory hungry than they used to be.   1GB is now the minimum to comfortably run an XP system.

Page File is how much hard drive space is being used as "virtual memory".    There will always be some page file usage (Windows swaps memory back and forth depending on what's active and what's not), but looks like you're using way more of your hard drive than you should be (700+MB).    Problem with using the hard drive to make up for RAM is it's really, really slow.

Here's what's tricky.  You certainly need more RAM, but your system should just be sluggish - from what you're describing it's practically dead.  I have a feeling something else is going on.   A few suggestions to start:

1) A full hardware diagnostic is in order.  Reboot the system, press F12 at the boot screen, select "boot to utility partition", and run the full set of tests, especially hard drive.     It could well be your hard drive is on its way out.

A disk check is also in order.   Link below, but the quick summary:   Click Start, then Run.   Type cmd to open a command window.  At the C:> prompt, type chkdsk /r .   It will say it's busy blah blah, do you want to run at the next restart?  Select Y.  Then reboot and let the disk check run.

2) Reboot your PC, but tap F8 at the boot screen until you get a menu to choose "Safe Mode".  In safe mode the bare minimum is running - no background software, bare-bones video, no audio, etc.  If it's considerably zippier in Safe Mode, you've got some program hogging your system in normal mode.

3) To see what process/programs are eating up memory:   Go back into Task Manager, but this time go to view in the menu, Select Columns,  put a tick in "Virtual Memory Size".  Then sort by Memory and VM, not CPU, and see what processes come up.

4) You mentioned running antivirus/spyware every day.   What programs are you using, and which of them are running in real time (real-time programs should have icons in your system tray)?  Some single programs are notorious system hogs (Norton and McAfee, especially older versions, are known to eat PC's alive).   If by chance you have several antivirus programs running, or even just installed, they could be tripping over each other and causing the slowdown.

5) Do you have anything other than keyboard, mouse, printer plugged into USB ports - like a camera, iPod, flash drive, etc.?  If so, remove them.

6) Another member (RoHe) reminded me the other day of the Windows Indexing service, which could be partially eating up both RAM and hard drive.  It's supposed to speed up file access and searches a bit by keeping an active index of your files, but can be turned off - it's not necessary.   Go to Start - Run, type services.msc.   In the list, find "Indexing Service", stop it, set it to disabled, and reboot.

After all that, assuming your hardware is OK, at some point you should consider a fresh start - though you'd need a full backup of all your data before you do it.     With the 520 you have the option of PC Restore, which completely wipes out the software and operating system and returns it to "factory fresh".

I don't think System Idle at 90% means anything is clogging your system.

WIth my system connected to the net and IE8 running, System Idle is at 91%. I have ZoneAlarm firewall and McAfee running in the background. Task Manager uses 1-2% when it's open so that probably means your CPU is idle ~92% of the time

Are you experiencing something specific which makes you think there's a problem or are you just assuming there's a problem based on System Idle, and because you didn't really understand its true meaning, as  Alexandra explained?

Alexandra: I'm going to try what you suggested, thank you for replying. (Sorry I'm so impatient >-<) Also, I've already reformatted recently, and this computer is only three years old. Can it be dieing already?

We use it every day, literally. Browsing net, playing MMO's (sometimes two at once), music, movies, chatting, art, writing...Maybe I've abused it a bit too much?

RoHe: Actually, I know what it means, but I wasn't aware it was normal for it to stay that high EVEN when I'm doing a bunch of things at the same time. It's not the fact it was high that tipped me off, it was the fact that I AM doing stuff (which means I'm giving it stuff to do?) and its still doesn't change its percent.

I've turned everything off and yeah, of course its peeking 100%, but when I run two MSN's (two different accounts at the same time), Yahoo, Object Dock, Windowsblinds, Rainmeter, Bell Internet Security, Firefox (Myspace, Facebook, AnimeFreak, DramaCrazy, Youtube), an online game in window mode AND Photoshop CS2...at the same time...I stare at the process list in task manager...is it really normal it stays above 90%?

Of course, everything crashed within a few minutes and I had to do a hard reboot...Firefox and task manager were the only one using cpu when I tried that.

I'm going to try what Alexandra suggested and see what I get.

Thanks for replying as well.

Edit: By the way, no I don't actually have all of those running at the same time. I did that just to see if it changed anything.
