Hi malick4132,

Dell has tested Inspiron 580 with the following processors without any issues:

  1. Intel Pentium G6950
  2. Intel Core i3 - 530, 540
  3. Intel Core i5 - 750, 650

Your computer is shipped with Mobile Intel H57 Express Chipset. For more information on this, you may refer to link: http://intel.ly/XJYkuG

Click on the compatible products to get the list of processors compatible with your computer. Most of them support LGA1156 socket or FCLGA1156 socket. Both are almost similar. Please ensure to update system BIOS before you upgrade the processor on computer.

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go  ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.

Please reply for further clarifications.

So what you are saying is that intel core i5 750 or 650 will fit?

and also is lga1156 the same as fclga1156 and h57 express chipset? and also is it different from h2 lga1156?

Hi malick4132,

Socket H/LGA 1156 and Socket H2/LGA 1155 are two different socket types. LGA 1155 is designed as a replacement for the LGA 1156 (known as Socket H). LGA 1155 has 1155 protruding pins to make contact with the pads on the processor. Processors of LGA 1155 and LGA 1156 sockets are not compatible with each other since they have different socket notches.

Intel Core i5 - 750 and 650 supports the socket type LGA1156 and FC-LGA 1156. FC stands for "Flip-Chip". All LGA 1156 CPU's are FC-LGA 1156. All modern desktop CPU's are "flip-chip" designs, so commonly called FC-LGA 1156 or "LGA 1156." However, Intel makes a lot of other kinds of IC's that are traditional non-flip-chip designs; therefore FC used to differentiate the flip chip IC's.

So you may install either of them (i5-750 or i5-650). For more information on the sockets and type of processors they support, you may refer to link: http://bit.ly/56vf91

Hope this helps.

DELL-Chinmay S, I think you did not mention Intel Core i3 550, which also works on the 580.

My aunt's Dell Inspiron 580 computer came with an Intel Core i3 550 3.20GHz processor chip when she bought the computer back in spring 2011 at Best Buy.  I remember I helped her buy one.  Her Dell Inspiron 580 PC also had the latest BIOS revision, A07.

and another thing to consider: the Intel Core i5 700 series like the 750 processor does not come with integrated graphics stuff.  One will have to install a 3rd party graphics card into the Dell Inspiron 580 PC if an i5-750 or an i5-760 CPU is installed, otherwise the PC will have no video and the Dell computer won't boot into Windows.

The fastest processor that Dell Inspiron 580 Tower computer can use is Intel i7-880. You need  to install a 3rd party graphics card, or Dell OEM! You need the latest A07 BIOS install before switching possessor!  Look for a: Intel Core i7-880 3.06GHz Quad Core Processor Socket 1156 (SLBPS) .

It is working in my Dell with  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 TI 2GB PCI Express 3.0 Dell (8MXMJ ) OEM video card. This is the best I could do for my old Dell, it Plays all my games on 1080 monitor - no problem . Good luck.
