Dell Opitplex GX620 NX Bit

I'm volunteering at a high school and there's some GX620's with Pentium 4's and 3 classrooms with a set of them. The district doesn't want to spend the money on technology so I'm trying to extend the life out of them since they're newer. I researched that the Opitplex GX620's have NX bit. I saw a few fourms running with them running Windows 8. Some of them have Pentium D's. I'm wondering that can a Opitplex GX620 with a Pentium 4 have NX Bit and run Windows 8 or Does it have to have a Pentium D to run Windows 8?? I hope I can upgrade to Windows 8 with the Pentium 4 intact?? If it has to have a Pentium D, then I'll put Windows 7 because the processor upgrade would be very expensive. Thanks, Any Helpful Answers Would Be Appericated:) I'm new to this fourm.

When Intel introduced its E0 core stepping in October 2004 they added a suffix each 500 Series chip's model number with J to identify those with NX support. NX bit shows up in BIOS under SECURITY called EXECUTE DISABLE BIT. A 560J for example. The only series that FITS into the GX620 are LGA775 so thats 500 series, 600 series, PENTD 800 series smithfield and PENTD 900 series Pressler.

NX bit and 8.1 requirements for NX and 64 bit operation are notin all Pentium4's .  WINDOWS 7 Starter, Home, Ultimate are End of Life End of sales.  Only Windows 7 pro is still available. Max ram regardless on a 620 is 3.5 gigs.  If your CPU has NX you can enable in bios. So the new requirement is 8.1 needs the processor to support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF.

Coreinfo will tell you.

A * = Yes    And - = no

EM64T           *       Supports 64-bit mode
NX              *       Supports no-execute page protection
PAE             *       Supports > 32-bit physical addresses
SSE2            *       Supports Streaming SIMD Extensions 2
SSE3            *       Supports Streaming SIMD Extensions 3
CX16            *       Supports CMPXCHG16B instruction
LAHF-SAHF       *       Supports LAHF/SAHF instructions in 64-bit mode
PREFETCHW       *       Supports PREFETCHW instruction

Users have the option of obtaining a 32-bit version of Windows 8 and updating to 32 bit windows 8.1

90 percent of the base pentium4 and pentium4  Hyperthread cpus from 2002,2003,2004 do not have this feature. All of the pentium D series support windows 8.0 but ONLY the 900 series supports 8.1 64 bit.

Pentium D 900 series will run windows 8 in 32 bit and 64 bit.  Earlier pentium D's only run 32 bit windows 8 or windows 10.

  • Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2, LAHF SAHF
  • RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
  • Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
  • Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

The mini tower models are the ones I recommend.

MAX CPU Is pentium D 960 with BIOS A11 and Copper heat pipe performance heatsink in the GX620 Mini TOWER.

Most of the hardware uses Native Windows 7 Drivers with the exception of the Audio Codec.

  1. Dell will qualify Windows Vista for Basic Windows Vista functionality on the following OptiPlex legacy platforms: OptiPlex GX620, GX520, GX280, SX280, GX270, SX270, 210L and 170L
  2. Dell will qualify Windows Vista for Basic Windows Vista functionality on the following Latitude legacy platforms: D800, D600, D400, D410, D505, D810, D610, D510, X300
  3. Dell will qualify Windows Vista for Basic Windows Vista functionality on the following Dell Precision Workstation legacy platforms: Dell Precision Workstation 360, 470, 650, 370, 380, 670, M60, M70, M20

To run the premium versions of Windows Vista, including the Windows AeroTM  user interface, PC's should be configured with at least 1GB system RAM and 128 MB graphics memory.

To help further optimize the Windows Vista experience Dell recommends 2 GB dual-channel (2-DIMMs) system RAM, a Dual-Core processor, a 7200 rpm Hard Drive and at least a 256 MB discrete graphics card.

Windows 7 32 bit will work fine.  The Driver for the audio is available on the Microsoft site.

The video would need an upgrade to Radeon ASUS EAH5450 minimum but that works too on GX280.
