If you have 4 DIMM slots you can do 4x2GB. If you have 2 DIMM slots you need to do 2x4GB.

I tried installing 4 X 2Gb DIMM's but the computer does not boot up, just hangs on a black screen on boot up. Do i need to enable anything in the bios ?

Do you get any error lights on the computer?

Can you post the specifications of the original RAM and the RAM you just inserted? The specifications will be located on a label on the side of the stick. Similar to this: http://aphnetworks.com/review/ocz_platinum_pc3_12800_enhanced_bandwidth_2x1gb/006.JPG

Did you start adding one by one because that also would show a bad DIMM slot

Both sets of 2 X 2Gb DIMM's work when they are installed seperately, but not when all 4 are installed together.

Thanks for the help.

Ended up putting one DIMM in at a time and booting inbetween..and managed to get all 4 X 2GB DIMM's working.

Not exactly sure why it didnt work originally...but working now.

Thanks again for the help.

I have installed 8 gb ram to try to double my ram into a dell optiplex 790.  It will only say it recognizes the original 3.whatever it had when I had 4 gb.  What did I do Wrong

Chances are you're only using a 32bit operating system. It will only recognize slightly over 3Gb RAM. To use more, you'd have to upgrade to a 64bit O/S.

I have a Dell Optiplex 790 Desktop. It has bios 790-A18 installed. I am running Windows 10 Pro x64 on it with a 3TB Western Digital hard disk on UEFI bios. The processor is an Intel I5-2400 and it has at total of 10gb of ram memory.

It came with 2 x 2gb ram and I added an additional 8 gb of ram. Here is the part number of the Kingston 4gb dimms that I added:

Kingston ValueRAM 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 DIMM SR x 8 Desktop Memory - part number: KVR13N9S8/4R

UPDATE: Sep 5, 2015

I added an additional 8gb of ram (2x4gb) and removed the two 2gb ram dimms. The 4gb ram dimms were the following part number:

Kingston Technology 4GB 1333MHz DDR3 (KAC-VR313S/4G). They are in Dimm sockets 2 &4.

The system now has a total of 16gb (4 x 4gb) of ram.
