Dell Optiplex 990 - Very Slow Responce

Hi,

I'm new to this forum & don't know exactly where to post... so excuse me, if i posted in the wrong forum...

Well i need help in knowing about upgrading a Optiplex 990 system bcoz i feel its working too slow n i need to boost the speed, following are the question i need help for :

Current Configuration:

* Processor  : Intel core i7 - 2600 cpu 3.4Ghz (4cpu)

* Ram : 8 gb ddr3 - 1333mhz frequency - (dimm1 = 2gb, dimm2 = 2gb, dimm3 4gb)

* Graphic : Nvidia Geforce 210 - 1gb

* OS : Win 7 Professional - 32 bits

* H.D.D : 500gb Sata.

Qts:

* Is it compatible to install win 7 professional - 64 bits.

* whats the maximum capacity of Ram that the Motherboard will handle n the frequency.

* can i install a SSD instead of a standard HDD, if yes whats the maximum cap for SSD.

Awaiting replies

Which form factor 990 do you have: Tower, Desktop, Small or Ultra-Small?

You have 8 GB of RAM installed but only a 32-bit OS which can only use ~3.2-3.5 GB of RAM.  How'd that happen?

How much useless junk is running in the background?

Max RAM for Desktop, Tower, Small is 16 GB,  DDR3-1600

Max RAM for Ultra-small is 8 GB,  DDR3-1600

This system should be compatible with 64-bit Win 7 and Dell offers drivers for Win 7/64-bit.

Depending on which form factor you have Crucial.com is offering a 1T SSD but it's expensive.

The first thing to do might be to install Win 7/64-bit because that can use all RAM that's currently installed and see if that improves performance before doing anything else...

Yes, max RAM in the mini-tower is 16 GB. The manual says DDR3, 1333 MHz.

Crucial is offering 1600 MHz RAM for this system but I don't know if it will actually run at 1600 MHz. Depending on BIOS, the chipset and drivers, 1600 MHz RAM may only run at 1333 MHz. Since Crucial is offering 1600 MHz, they'll at least guarantee that it will work, but I don't know if they'll guarantee the speed.

On the other hand, you may be pushing things if you try 1866 MHz RAM. If the system can't handle more than 1333 MHz (according to the manual), it may not even boot with 1866 MHz RAM and even if it does, the RAM may only run at a slower speed.

So you might want to save the extra cost of 1866 MHz RAM and avoid the risk it won't work and you're stuck with something you can't use.

I don't think you're going to notice much difference between RAM running at 1600 and 1866 MHz anyway...

Hi Rohe,

Thankx for the reply,, sorry for not mentioning earlier,, well the FF is Tower,

as u mentioned to about crucial.com, i went n tried the site,, i found on the web Crucial Advisor tool &

Crucial System Scanner, after scanning i found that the "Max RAM for Desktop, Tower, Small is 16 GB,  DDR3-1600 <<< could b 1866 at the most" can u please assure about this..

on the other hand i applied ur formula as u recommended for going step by step,,

Now win 7 - 64 is installed with a 480SSD n achieved a good responce from the PC...

Thankx for advising on it...

Hey ROHE,,

Well sorry to inform,, i had already tried with buying both the speed ram (1600 & 1866mhz) n tired,, the system is booting up with them,, but with the same 1333mhz speed,, (unfortunately its not giving neither 1600 nor 1866mhz speed) so had changed the plan,, instead of wasting money on the ram,, i just bought 1x4gb (1600mhz) n made the system with 12gb..

Now the config is,,

WIN 7 - 64bits.. 480gb Kingston Hyper SSD.. 12Gb RAM ( 2gb + 2gb + 4gb + 4gb = 12gb ).. additional 500gb WD Blue ( existing HDD,, which i'm using as a internal storage for my projects n personal files)..

thanks for ur help,, in enlightening me in the matter...

well,, theres some new issues with the OS after the installation...

actually,, i'm using 2 screen ( 26" Samsung LCD + 100" Digital Device Plasma ),, whenever i start to work the screen resolution keeps on flickering,, i tried to fix it with DETECT from the os,, after doing so it stops for a while,, but after on some time,, it keeps coming back (even though i had left with resolution setting unchanged) n also it occurs if i make a restart,, is there nething i can do to get rid of this issue...

Note: to avoid this problem,, i bought a local VGA splitter from which both the screens r connected..

thank u
