PC4200 is TOO SLOW for a GX620.

The ram must NOT BE ECC and Must Be Low Density INTEL Chipset Compatable Ram.

8 Gigs is Max with 64 bit CPU and OS.

Recommended Upgrade

I took the plunge and bought these sticks of RAM on the off chance they would work. Amazingly they did actually work a treat so this RAM was cheap as chips at 5GBP each :) The computer now runs a treat with 3GB of RAM. Plenty for anything my daughter needs to do with this machine.

PC2 6400 ram is fine.    PC2 4200 is not.  Glad to hear it worked out.

@maikal - Read this thread and then inspect the motherboard on your GX620 for damaged capacitors. If you find any, the motherboard will have to be replaced...

PC6400 is more than fast enough (I don't think the chipset will run faster than PC5300 speeds.

Ideally, you want to install memory in matched pairs, so I would suggest you buy 4x the 1 GBP RAM sticks and not use the PC4200 stick currently in the system (the PC6400 RAM will be throttled back to that slower speed if you were to add one or three faster pieces to the system... You may not care, but at such a low price I'd try for that little performance edge with faster memory.)

As an option, many are reporting these systems can support up to 8 gigs of RAM, though not formally supported by Dell, so if you find a good deal on 2 Gig DDR2 RAM that may be an option (but 4 Gigs for 20 GBP is most likely sufficient).

SpeedStep,

I bought 2- 2GB sticks of DDR2 PC-6400 non-ECC to upgrade my GX620 Ultra Compact (only 2 memory slots) running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. Was terribly slow with only 1GB installed.

After installing the 4GB RAM, it wouldn't boot up. Tried removing one stick...still didn't work.

Any idea what is my problem???

Thx

Update the bios to A11.  3.5 Gigs is max regardless of how much is installed.

Ram MUST BE LOW Density INTEL compatable Ram.  2 Gig Dimms do not usually work at all or Post until the bios is updated.

The RAM sticks I bought are labelled 2GB PC-6300/6400 DDR2 800Mhz 2048MB Non ECC.

They are Komputer Bay matched sticks.

How do I know if they are low density Intel compatible?

You said 2GB Dimms don't usually work at all.

What specific type memory upgrade do you recommend that can give me max of 3.5GB for my 2 slots?  Thx.

Thank-you SpeedStep!

I was going to update the Bios to A11 as recommended but I've read that some users have had boot problems after updating to Bios. I have the original 1GB RAM installed (2-512 sticks).

Should I be able to update to A11 successfully or will having Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit going to give me a problem?

I discovered my computer (bought used) had already been upgraded to latest BIOS A11.

So with A11 update I should be able to install upgrade to 4GB RAM (2-2GB).  I will return the KomputerBay RAM and try the Crucial memory and hope that it works OK.
