If you buy from crucial.com and they recommended it for your specific model, they'll take it back if it doesn't work.
Use the search wizard on their home page to find RAM for this model.

Hi,
I've also got a Precision 380 desktop and i'm looking to upgrade the memory from 1Gb to 8Gb.
Will this machine accept ECC buffered ram?

Yes, but you probably can't mix/match ECC and Non-ECC RAM.
From the spec sheet:
Up to 8GB1 dual-channel DDR2 533MHz ECC registered memory; Four DIMM slots; 667MHz and non-ECC memory also available

The 380 DOES NOT Accept BUFFERED or REGISTERED ram.
There are ECC Modules that are NOT BUFFERED.
Specs: DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V • 256Meg x 64 •

Massive thanks for confirming that.
You have saved me from buying duff RAM from an eBay auction, that would not accept returns.
