Dell Vostro 430 memory problem
Yesterday I tried adding some new RAM to my Vostro 430 desktop and I've read countless support threads looking for help but with no luck.
Windows recognises the 8gb I'm trying to get, but told me only 4gb was usable. I updated the bios and the chipset drivers. I went into msconfig > boot > advanced and the 'number of processors' and 'maximum memory' were already unchecked. I can't find the 'memory remapping' option anywhere in the CMOS screen so I couldn't check that.
I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 professional and all of the RAM are identical Hynix Korea DDR3 2gb sticks. I've never had this problem before, or owned a Vostro before, so I'm a total noob and have no idea where to go from here. I reset the battery and switched around the position of the sticks and now the computer only recgonises 2gb of RAM available out of 8gb. I'm totally lost. Any suggestions?

Dell computers are fussy about memory. Go to Crucial.com to find out what memory the vostro model requires and see if your memory matches.

Test the memory slots to see if all are working. Try one chip in each slot, one at a time. Then do the same with another chip and repeat. You might find a bad slot or or bad chip.

Mary, I'm confused about this. Your link shows the memory is 1600Mz. I have the same model Vostro and have the same problem with finding memory, and the specs for the 430 say 1333Mz max for the memory.
Here's what the info on the linked page says:
8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3 PC3-12800 Unbuffered NON-ECC 1.35V 512Meg x 64
