I apologize for the inconvenience that you have faced.
Please confirm if you are trying to wake up the system after putting it into sleep or hibernate mode? Also, do you have Media Center Option installed on the system?
Meanwhile, click on the back arrow button on the top left of the screen, it may return the display to normal screen.
Thanks for your reply. I had used the system the previous evening and left it on. The next morning, the screen was blank with the fan humming. I don't know if it had entered a sleep or hibernate but in either case, i tried rebooting the system several times as suggested by the Dell technical support staff. I don't believe I have Media Center Option installed.
As I indicated, I selected telephone prompts that should have given me the option of paying for service, post warranty. Yet the technicians insisted they first needed to find out what the problem was before they could discuss fees, etc. Lack of warranty is no excuse for poor service in my book, particularly given I would be shopping for another PC soon. In either case, I've taken my PC to a local technician for repair, so I don't need any more responses to this post.

If the graphics card is bad, the monitor is not going to help.
