Dell gx620 Ultra Small Form Factor Problem...hardware, software, or both?
I don't know if my problem is hardware or software so here goes. A few weeks ago I activated McAfee's backup product. Shortly thereafter I started getting "power driver state failure" errors on shutdown. I contacted McAfee and, of course, they told me I had a driver problem and I needed to contact Dell. Since I was in the middle of filing taxes I decided to just leave it powered on for a few days. Well, suddenly it started to randomly reboot...so I manually shut it off. Now when I try to boot up it goes into an endless loop of powering up for a second or two, then it seems to lose power for another second or two. So, do I simply need to replace the external power supply/transformer? Or, is there some internal component that needs to be replaced? Or, does this sound like a driver (i.e. software) problem? I'm desperate as i need to get my taxes finished and filed.

Hi chapmanwj,
Sorry to hear about your system troubles! From what you are describing it sounds like a hardware component is causing the power up loop. Is the system able to reach the Windows logo at start up or is it rebooting almost immediately after the power button is hit / around the time the Dell logo appears on screen?
If the system is getting to Windows its possible the system software could have become corrupt.
If rebooting prior to the OS I would recommend going through some POST troubleshooting, removing all external peripheral devices and trying to power up. If the problem persists an internal component may be the cause. Removing components like memory / hdd, one at a time and testing individually should help pin down the problem. Here’s a great guide that goes over some more specifics.
If the problem persists its possible a power supply / motherboard could be at fault.

Hi Shawn,
I had already read that article. Just last night tried what I read there as well as stuff I found on another blog. Now it does absolutely nothing when I hit the power button. I'm inclined to believe I have a power supply that's gone bad. I've had a motherboard go bad before in a computer I previously owned. It wouldn't boot up but it would power up and beep. This one does nothing.
As I mentioned my computer is the ultra small form factor so it has an external power supply similar to what comes with a laptop. It has a small LED on top that glows green when you plug it in. Even though it's glowing green I know the unit isn't getting power. I'll entertain any other suggestions and/or possible solutions.
In the meantime I'm going to start by looking for a replacement power supply.
Thank for your help!
Willie
