I fixed the problem.  It was the boot block or boot record.  I got the answer in the Microsoft website.

Have you tried repairing Windows while booting from the Windows 7 install DVD?

Repairing The Windows 7 Installation

1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart your computer

2. Boot from the DVD.

3. Choose your language and click Next.

4. Click Repair Your Computer and then select the operating system you want to repair.

5. Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.

If that doesn't fix it:f

1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD and restart your computer

2. Boot from the DVD. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.

3. Choose your language and click Next.

4. Click Repair Your Computer and then select the operating system you want to repair.

5. Select Command Prompt and try the following commands (a single command might work, or you may need to use multiple commands depending on the exact problem):

bootrec /fixMBR

bootrec /fixBoot

bootrec /rebuildBCD

Note: there is a space before the /

Hi Ed,

Obviously, if there is a hardware problem, restoring your backup isn't going to fix things. So that would indicate you actually do have a hardware problem.

Here is a download for the diagnostics for your system. You can load these on a bootable CD or flash drive.

You should also refer to the troubleshooting section of your manual. In particular, I would check the diagnostic lights.

If you reboot and press F8, can you get to the menu? You may need to repair Win 7 which is probably under Advanced boot options.

Osprey4 - I sort of knew it wasn't the drive.  Since the Windows 7 install is fresh and I have backups, I decided to learn something.  I was able to get my Win7 upgrade disk to do a repair and also did the Carbonite mirror restore.

RoHe - I can't get F8 to be recognized.  Must not get that far in the ROM. (?)

Thanks.  I post results.  Looks like that new Microsoft Surface Pro is closer than I planned.

There are no errors reported.  All tests passed.  I unplugged all USB devices.  Is there a way to log the boot process to see what the error is?

Glad you got it sorted. :emotion-21:

Was just going to suggest fixmbr when I read the post that you couldn't get to the F8 menu, but that was before I got to your last post.
