Dimension 3000 memory upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade the memory in my Dimension 3000 from 512MB to 2 GB.

When I install the 2 1GB modules the system just beeps.

I have replace the 128MB PC3200 modules with

1GB PC3200 400MHZ 2.5v modules

There is nothing I see in the BIOS that has any effect.

HELP ME!!!!!

When I add them one at a time the system does not see them. I have swapped them and still the same problem. I'm going to try them in a different computer tomorrow to see if they work.

Just my luck, get a deal on memory but not compatible with Dell

Make sure the memory is fully inserted in the sockets.

Try the new modules one at a time (in the socket closest to the processor).  If neither module works, then they are incompatible.  Even though the specs you indicate should be compatible, some memories just won't work in some machines, but might work in others.

If only one works, then the other is bad.

Do you get beeping?  Or just nothing?

Sometimes people are not pushing the modules all the way into the sockets.

Nothing when I add them one at a time. The BIOS setup screen doesn't even see the memory.

The only time it beeps is when the any (one or both) of the new modules are installed.

Of course nothing comes up so I can't tell what the real reason for the beep is. My guess is that it does,t see any memory at all.

The beep pattern indicates the problem.  But most likely the memory is not compatible and should be returned.

Hello,

It sure sounds as though you bought memory that is not compatible with your Dell Dim 3000.

It requires the 'correct' DDR 333-PC2700 or DDR 400-PC3200, and will accept all sizes up to 1GB chips for a total of 2GB.

I suggest you return the memory. You can see why you need the correct memory in Dell systems at my web site.

The votes are in. It has to be the wrong memory for this computer. While everything appears to match, it still doesn't work.

The memory scan from crutial displays the following:

  • Maximum Memory Capacity:  2048MB
  • Currently Installed Memory:  512MB
  • Available Memory Slots:  0
  • Number of Banks:  2
  • Dual Channel Support:   Yes
  • CPU Manufacturer:  GenuineIntel
  • CPU Family:   Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz Model 4, Stepping 1
  • CPU Speed:  2793 MHz

If I'm lucky I can return the memory and the company has the correct type for this computer. Otherwise, the upgrade will cost a few dollars more then I originally thought.

Thank you and I will let you know the final outcome.
