Dimension 4500, Unable to get video signal?

Hello. I have been trying to get an old Dimension 4500 up and running to donate. I have tried 2 video cards, and still no signal, unless I press one of the buttons on the monitor. It states that the monitor is in power save mode, and click keyboard or mouse to continue. I do that, and back to blank screen. I have set up computers before, but this I cannot get going. I have tried replacing the bios battery, removing/inserting memory, no change. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

What specific AGP 4x video cards have you tested?

Same result with both older PNY agp video card, and std pci video card.  Tried on different monitors, same result.  Thanks

There is no such thing as "standard" pci cards.  5v cards will not work in pentium 4 systems because they require UNIVERSAL PCI 2.2 or PCI 2.3 cards that accept 5v or 3.3v signals.  There is also the AGP 1.0 vs 2.0 vs 4.0 issue.  If you plug a 5V AGP 1.0 card into a 2.0 or 4.0 slot you can permanently kill the motherboard in 15 seconds or less.

Conventional PCI

Spec Year Change
PCI 1.0 1992 Original issue
PCI 2.0 1993 Incorporated connector and add-in card specification
PCI 2.1 1995 Incorporated clarifications and added 66 MHz chapter
PCI 2.2 1998 Incorporated ECNs, and improved readability
PCI 2.3 2002 Incorporated ECNs, errata, and deleted 5 volt only signaling
PCI 3.0 2002 Removed support for the 5.0 volt keyed system board connector

GOOD CARD PCI 2.3  2 keyways

BAD CARD with no PCI buffers and 1 keyway  5v ONLY.

It should beep. With no card installed. If it doesnt then there are more issues than are worth fixing.
