Dimension 4700 memory upgrade
Dell suggests Corsair 4 GB RAM upgrade for my specific service tag. I purchased the upgrade, and can't get the RAM to work properly. I had a Dell operator suggest that I remove the old RAM and install the new, but this did not work. The only configuration that gave me some success, was to leave the old memory in (256MB X 2), add a 1GB, and add 1 of the Corsair 2 GB. My system would then report 2.99 RAM as the current memory. Are there any suggestions out there? I want to take advantage of the full 4 GB capabilities, but don't want to allow Dell to get away with wasting my money on a product I can't fully use.
Please help.

Wherever you found the info on the 2GB memory modules is wrong according to the Dell manual. According to the manual max is 1GB modules and the reason it works with the 1GB module. The Crucial Memory site also lists maximum of 1GB (Crucial memory is what most of the techies here recommend for Non-Dell memory as Crucial is guaranteed to work in Dell's www.crucial.com ). Also, if you have a 32 bit Operating System (Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7) a 32 bit OS cannot fully use 4GB of RAM and the max you will be able to use is somewhere around 3.2 to 3.5GB.
Here is what the Dell manual states:
Memory
Type
400-MHz (PC2-3200) and 533-MHz (PC2-4300) DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM non-ECC
Memory connectors
four
Memory capacities
128-, 256-, 512-, or 1-GB non-ECC
Minimum memory
128 MB
NOTE: Up to 128 MB of system memory may be allocated to support graphics, depending on system memory size and other factors.
Maximum memory
4 GB
