Dimension 5150 memory (RAM) question
Hi,
I own Dell Dimension 5150 Desktop PC and I want to upgrade the RAM. Currently, it has 2 GB of RAM (4 x 512 MB).
Can I mix the 512 MB RAM with 1 GB of RAM?
I plan to buy "A-DATA PC2 6400 DDR2 800 MHz - 2 GB", which I believe 2 x 1 GB module.
So, at the end, I will put 2x512MB and 2x1GB.
Can I do this?
What is the max of RAM for Dimension 5150?
Thanks.

I have an E510 which is identical to the 5150.
The memory specs for our PC's is:
Type
400-MHz and 533-MHz DDR2 unbuffered SDRAM
Memory connectors
four
Memory capacities
256 MB, 512 MB, or 1 GB non-ECC
Maximum memory
4 GB
You can use some higher speed memory but the system will only run at the bus speed or the slowest installed memory speed. If you install 800 Mhz memory it will not run at 800 Mhz.
Keep in mind Dell's have a history of not working with all brands of memory (and there is no pattern). I have G-Skill memory in my E510 (four 1GB memory modules) and it's working OK. For 3rd party (non Dell) memory, we usually suggest Crucial Memory as it is guaranteed to work in Dell's. www.crucial.com
