Dimension 8100 Memory upgrade Questions

Greetings:
Hopefully someone out there can answer a few questions before I purchase more memory. I read my Dimension 8100 Solution guide but some questions are not answered in that publication.

Currently I have 128 MB of RDRAM. Since these must be installed in pairs it means that 2 of the 4 slots on my PC are already used up with 64mb RDRAM chips.

1) Do ALL of the slots have to contain the exact same capacity RDRAM chips? Or can I fill the remaining 2 slots with higher capacity RDRAM chips?

2) If I get 2 new 128MB RDRAM Chips can they be placed in the, currently, open slots (Slot 3 & slot 4) or do the higher capacity ram chips go into the first 2 slots?

3) Are the RIMM Sockets all 184 pin sockets?

On Page 61 of the Solutions Guide book it reads that there are:

4 RIMM sockets.
It then reads, "RIMM Capacities = 64-,128-, and 256-MB RDRAM"

Under "Maximum RAM" it reads, " 2GB"

If the Maximum sized chip is used = "256" (as indicated under "RIMM CAPACITIES") and since there are 4 RIMM SOCKETS then the max one could get would be 1GB (Actually 1,024MB). So then why do they list 2GB as the Max Capacity since this cannot be achieve based on the info they provide? There is no where in the book that indicates one can use the 512 MB RDRAM chips!

Thankfully

You can put different sized chips in slots 3 and 4. I am running 256 256 64 64. It works the other way as well, but there is an unfounded superstition indicating that the larger chips should be closer to the processor, and I gave in to it.

All Rdram has the same number of pins. That is not an issue. Of greater concern is the speed of your current memory. If it is PC-600, you would be better served to replace it with PC-800, rather than add to it. Early in the 8100 run, PC-600 was the default.

You can add 512 Mb chips. The specs are outdated, if they say otherwise. Costwise, the 256s are a better choice.

Hey, thanks very much for the information. Your pot was most helpful.

For all your help I can only offer this corny joke:

Que: Do you know why a Cat isn't permitted to be judged by a jury of his peers?
Ans: Because of Purrrrrrrrjury!
