Dimension 8200 CPU

I want to upgrade my CPU to the Max my system can handle (im too chicken to overclock it for risk of damage to the system)

I do know that my system is old and that I could get a new one for a decent price. This system is more of a hobby rather than a productivity machine. I have a new laptop that screams past this.

Here is my current setup:

Pentium 4 1.8Ghz  400FSB(Sisosoft Sandra says the type is Willamette-not sure what that means)

I just bought a processor on eBay- it wont fit!

It looks the same size to the naked eye, but its slightly smaller than what I currently have, and I refuse to force ANY sort of component into a socket for fear of damaging it permanently.

I bought a P4 2.4Ghz/512/400/1.525v  SL6GS (labeled on the processor)

I didn't write down what is labeled on the current one, i will open the system again later and get that info.

I hope that I just didn't waste my money (only $33 but hey its money!)

I guess i should have done more looking into my current setup.

Does anyone know or have reference to where I can find the fastest processor my system can handle?

The D-8200 has either a Dell OEM Intel 850 or 850e chipset motherboard.

It would be an 850, if you have a smaller than 2.0GHz processor or the system predates mid-May 2002. The largest processor you can use, would be the 2.8GHz/400MHz.

For late model systems built after mid-May 2002 with 850e chipset, you would be limited to a processor with a 533 MHz FSB.

If you want to identify chipset version as either an Intel 850e or 850, try using the online configurator at Powerleap.

You can find a Intel Pentium 4 2.80GHz 400MHz 512K 478 pin processor here, but it is expensive.

Note: The Dell 8200 cannot be overclocked.

SUCCESS!!!

It was a bent pin that was causing the problems.

I VERY carefully bent it back into place with fingernails.

Tried again and it "popped" in place, it just took a tiny bit of pushing to place in socket.

Im running it now, and all seems good.

Thanks for the help!

Now if i can only overcome my fear of damage, i will try to overclock someday.

Just for the record, the 400mhz FSB Dimension 8200 max speed is 2.4Ghz, 2.8Ghz is for the 533mhz FSB.
