Dimension 8200 vs. Dimension 4500

I would like to buy a Dimension 8200 but am seriouisly considering 4500 because of its USB 2.0 support on motherboard. The only difference between them is memory(Rambus vs. DDR.) Does anyone know about the difference in performance between 2.53 GHz equally configured 8200 and 4500 systems?

Hi,

A USB 2 PCI adapter is only a $20 upgrade for the 8100.

the rambus memory is faster and will give you higher scores with video benchmarks but you shouldn't notice any difference playing games if you get a good video card and you sure won't notice any difference with anything else.

One other factor: 4500 is limited to 1gig of ram while 8200 is 2gig max. Just wait for the new version of the 8200, the 8250 as it's being called. Due out soon I hear and will have native USB 2.0 capability. Also, the Gateway 700 series is RDRAM and already has 2.0 support. Good review of both systems at gamersdepot.com

Thank you for the informative replies.
I know that a USB 2.0 card adds only $20 to the price but it also occupies one of 4 precious PCI slots and may even create conflicts. The remaining three will have to be shared by modem and sound cards, network card(s), SCSI and newer Ultra ATA cards, firewire, and other specialized cards. Yes, I know I can use USB versions.

The RDRAM is the only difference I found. Also, the 8200 DOES have the USB 2.0 option, and i believe the 4500 doesnt. You had it backwards. Either way thats where the extra 100-150 dollars in the final price comes from, RDRAM is the top.

FYI;
No this is backwards. The only way to get USB 2.0 with the 8200 is with a PCI card.

No more than 4 PCI devices can be configured in the Dimension 8200. PCI devices include audio cards, networking cards, Dell Movie Studio offerings, modems and the USB 2.0 card.
